Bemidji State falls 1-0 in series finale to UND

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Emily Brookshaw (Sr., Webster, Wisc.) had another sensational performance in net, but it wasn’t enough as the Bemidji State women’s hockey team was defeated 1-0 by North Dakota Saturday afternoon at John Glas Fieldhouse.

Brookshaw saved 33 shots against the Fighting Sioux, giving her 63 total on the weekend while only allowing two goals in the two games.

Bemidji State controlled the tempo in the first period, keeping the puck in the UND zone for the majority of the first 20 minutes.

BSU outshot the Fighting Sioux 15-8, but neither team was able to impact the scoreboard. Both teams stayed out of the penalty box during that frame.

The second period was a totally different story.

North Dakota attempted 20 shots to BSU’s four, and the Beavers went into the box on four separate occasions, giving UND ample opportunity to play on the man-advantage. Randi Motsko finally was able to take advantage of one of those power-play opportunities, scoring with 2:13 remaining in the period in what proved to be the game-winner. Kelly Lewis and Kelsey Fletcher assisted on the play.

Bemidji State (4-17-3, 1-15-2 WCHA) outshot UND 7-6 in the third period, but could not seem to find the net a day after scoring four goals against this same Fighting Sioux squad in the first game of the series. The Beavers were 0-for-3 on the power play and North Dakota went 1-for-4.

Brittany Kirkham saved 26 shots in her third shutout against Bemidji State this season.

The loss moves BSU to 12-11-1 all-time against UND (4-16-4, 4-12-2 WCHA), and 1-3 this season.

Even though they lost, the Beavers were still able to completely dominate North Dakota in faceoffs. BSU was 51-17 in Saturday’s game on faceoffs and 95-41 over the two-game weekend.

Tara Hiscock (Sr., Turtle River, Minn.) was 21-6, Julie Rising (Fr., Millbrae, Calif.) was 14-3 and Franny Dorr (So., Roseville, Minn.) was 11-2 on their respective faceoffs in the game. Casie Hanson went 8-13 on her faceoffs for UND, but no other Fighting Sioux was able ot win more than four.

Bemidji State returns to action Jan. 18-19 when Minnesota Duluth enters the Glas. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. and 2:07 p.m., respectively.
