BEMIDJI, Minn. -
Julie Rising
(Fr., Millbrae, Calif.) made sure the Bemidji State women’s
hockey team would not be shut out against the No. 2-ranked team in the
country.
She netted her team-leading fifth
goal of the season in BSU’s 6-1 loss to the University of
Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon at John Glas Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs got on the board early, scoring three goals on their first three shots attempted on net.
Elin
Holmlov scored 1:03 into the game, Laura Fridfinnson earned a goal 2:06
into the game, and Holmlov added a marker 4:36 into the first period.
Iya Gavrilova, Haley Irwin and Jocelyne Larocque each recorded one
assist on the three goals. Irwin added a final first-period goal with
an assist by Fridfinnson at the 14:15 mark, and the Beavers fell behind
4-0 early.
After Minnesota Duluth jumped out
to its 3-0 lead, the Bulldogs pulled goaltender Kim Martin. Johanna
Ellison played the rest of the first period and the entire second
period. Amie Meyer played the final period for UMD. Martin never
recorded a save, Ellison had two saves and Meyer had four.
Even
after giving up four goals, the Beavers never gave up and kept
fighting. Rising was able to put BSU on the board at the 6:52 mark of
the second period. Eva Schwaerzler (Fr. Dornbirn, Austria) and Erin Johnson (Fr., Farmington, Minn.) helped on the goal.
Bemidji
State did a good job staying out of the penalty box, committing only
three penalties in the game. Even though the Beavers never allowed a
power-play goal, they did give up a short-handed marker to Myriam
Trepanier 12:25 into the second off assists by Irwin and Gavrilova.
Tara
Gray scored later in the second period for the sixth goal for UMD off
an assist by Karine Demeule, and the Beavers entered the second
intermission down 6-1.
The defensive pressure picked up for BSU after the first two stanzas, as the Bulldogs were shut out the entire third period.
Emily Brookshaw
(Sr., Webster, Wisc.) began the game in net for Bemidji State. She
saved eight shots, allowed four goals and played only the first period.
Jennifer Bauer (Fr., St. Catharines, Ontario) came on
in relief duty for the Beavers, and played fairly well. She allowed two
goals while saving a career-high 30 shots in the final two frames.
UMD
(20-3-1, 17-3-0 WCHA) outshot BSU 44-7, and won the faceoff battle
27-23. Both teams were shut out on the power play, with the Bulldogs
going 0-for-2 and the Beavers going 0-for-3.
The Beavers move 0-37-1 all-time against the Bulldogs, and UMD increased its current win streak over BSU to 27 games.
Bemidji
State (4-19-3, 1-17-2 WCHA) will take the next weekend off before
welcoming the Minnesota Gophers into the Glas Feb. 1-2. The puck will
drop on both contests at 2:07 p.m.
