The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell to
Minnesota State University Tuesday in non-conference action at the BSU
Gymnasium in Bemidji, Minn.
The Mavericks led
from wire to wire hitting nearly 60-percent of their field goal
attempts (40-69), including nine three-pointers, en route to claiming
their 16th win of the season as they improve to 16-2 overall, 106-54.
Katherine Jamnick
(So., C, Soudan, Minn.) led the BSU attack as she tied a career-high
netting 10 points on 5-of-7 from the field. Jamnick’s five field
goals is a new career-high in field goals made in a game. Karlee Simonson (Sr., F, Rockford, Minn.), Stephanie Peterson (Sr., C, Bismarck, N.D.) and Kristina Salscheider (Jr., G, Cass Lake, Minn.) each chipped in seven points. The seven point effort was a new career-high for Salscheider.
Heidi Matzke (Jr., G, Red Lake Falls, Minn.) and Melissa Roberts (Jr., F, Staples, Minn.) led the Beavers on the boards with a game-high five while Matzke and Amy Lawson (Sr., G, Spencer, Iowa) each dished out three assist to lead the Beavers.
Felicia
Foster led a trio of Mavericks in double-figures scoring a game-high 20
points making good on 7-of-9 from the field, 1-of-2 from behind the arc
and a perfect 5-of-5 from the line. Tiffany Moe added 18 points while
Anna Voltmer came off the bench to chip in 14 points on 7-of-9
shooting. The Mavericks were led by Alex Andrews, Liz Trauger, and
Nicole Christianson with four boards apiece to help the Mavericks gain
a 35-29 rebounding advantage over the Beavers. Joanne Noreen led all
players with five assists.
The Mavericks got
out of the box quickly as Tiffany Moe a three followed by a Alex
Andrews layup to give the Mavericks a 5-0 just 1:47 into the game.
BSU’s
Matzke cut the lead to three with 17:20 left in the half, but MSU would
convert on its next two possessions to return its lead to seven, 9-2,
by the 16-minute mark. BSU closed the lead to two points off a jumper
by Simonson and a three pointer by Roberts, 9-7 with just over 15
minutes left in the half.
That would be as
close as the Beavers got in the half as the Mavericks went on a 47-14
run during the final 15 minutes to garner a 33-point lead heading into
the break, 56-23.
As the second half got
underway, BSU netted eight of the first 12 points to shrink the MSU
advantage to 29 points, 60-31, but by the mid point of the half, MSU
increased its lead to 45 points, 86-41, and would never look back.
The Mavericks would keep the Beavers at bay as the clock wound down claiming the season sweep over the Beavers, 106-54.
The
Beavers were out shot 58.0 percent (40-69) to 38.0 percent (19-50) in
the game and were just 13-of-19 (.684) from the free-throw line while
MSU converted 17 of its 18 freebies. The Mavericks also committed just
12 turnovers in the contest while forcing the Beavers into a
season-high 29.
The win gives MSU a 19-10 lead in the all-time series between the teams.
Bemidji
State (10-8; 6-3 NSIC) will step back in conference play on Friday,
Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26 when they travel to Wayne, Neb. and
Marshall, Minn. The Beavers will play Wayne State College on Friday and
Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday. Game times are set for 6:00 p.m.
