ST. CLOUD, Minn. - A week after the Bemidji State
women’s hockey team scored a season series-high seven goals, it
was shut out 1-0 Friday afternoon by No. 9/10 St. Cloud State at the
National Hockey Center.
The Beavers gave up an
early goal to Marie-Michel Lemieux 12:52 into the opening period, and
they were never able to drive home a goal despite attempting 28 shots
compared to the 31 by St. Cloud State. Brittni Kuyper assisted on the
game-winning goal.
Erin Cody (Fr., Roseville, Minn.), the reigning WCHA Rookie of the Week, and Brooke Collins (Jr., Pilot Mound, Manitoba) led the way for Bemidji State with four shots apiece. Julie Rising (Fr., Millbrae, Calif.) and Eva Schwaerzler (Fr., Dornbirn, Austria) each attempted three shots, but none of them were able to find the back of the net.
Emily Brookshaw
(Sr., Webster, Wisc.) had another impressive game in the crease for
Bemidji State, saving 30 shots in 59:29 of action. Kendall Newell shut
out the Beavers for the second time this season, saving 28 shots.
BSU
(3-15-3, 0-13-2 WCHA) also lost in the first game of the first series
with St. Cloud State (11-5-3, 8-5-2 WCHA) earlier in the season 1-0.
There were a few similarities between this defeat and the last besides
just the score.
For instance, Bemidji State
had two more power-play opportunities in both games, but were unable to
capitilize each time. The Beavers went 0-for-5 on the man advantage
while the Huskies were 0-for-3. Bemidji State was also narrowly outshot
in both games. Also, Jay Mendel was the head referee in both games.
Bemidji State will look to rebound in Game Two of the series Saturday at 2:07 p.m. in the National Hockey Center.
