EVELETH, Minn. - The Bemidji State University
women’s ice hockey team went into the penalty box a few too many
times and couldn’t avoid an onslaught of goals from the No.
1-ranked offensive attack in the country as the home team was defeated
by Wisconsin 9-0 Saturday night in the first United States Hockey Hall
of Fame game.
The game was played in the
Eveleth Hippodrome, and featured some of the best players in the
country on the No. 1-ranked Badger squad and some of the best young
talent to come out of northern Minnesota playing for Bemidji State.
The
first two goals from Wisconsin came just 19 seconds apart midway
through the first period in the form of a power-play goal from Hilary
Knight and an even-strength marker from Angie Keseley. Keseley’s
goal was unassisted while Knights goal was assisted by Jasmine Giles
and Carolyn Prevost.
Meghan Duggan notched a
power-play goal with assists from Knight and Brittany Haverstock 15:13
into the first, and the two teams skated out the rest of the period
with the 3-0 Badger lead.
To add insult to
injury, Wisconsin scored three goals in the second frame from Giles,
Kelly Nash and Prevost. The first and third goals of the period were
scored on the power-play while Nash’s goal was an even-strength
marker. Alycia Matthews, Brooke Ammerman, Maria Evans, Rachel Bible,
Nash and Olivia Jakiel all recorded assists in the period.
If
six wasn’t enough, the road squad lit the lamp three more times
in the final period for the ending score of 9-0. Kyla Sanders scored
twice and Ammerman had one goal in the third. Ammerman, Haverstock (2),
Giles and Mallory Deluce all assisted on goals in the final frame.
The
nine goals was the most given up by Bemidji State since another Badger
onslaught came Dec. 3, 2006. That night Wisconsin notched 10 goals
while BSU was able to score three times at John Glas Fieldhouse.
The
Badgers outshot Bemidji State 48-16 and was an incredible 4-of-6 on the
power play. The Beavers went 0-for-4 on their man-advantage
opportunities.
BSU goaltender Alana McElhinney
(Fr., Calgary, Alberta) got the start in net and gave up the nine goals
while saving a career-high 39 shots in 60 minutes of action.
Erin Johnson (So., Farmington, Minn.), Annie Bauerfeld (So., Woodbury, Minn.) and Erin Cody (So., Roseville, Minn.) each netted three shots in the game to lead the Beavers.
Bemidji
State’s next test will came in the form of the Ohio State
Buckeyes next weekend. The Beavers will hit the road for their first
WCHA action away from home Oct. 24-25 with game times of 6:07 p.m. and
12:07 p.m., respectively.
