SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Sioux Falls Arena) - The Bemidji
State University women’s basketball team got a career-best 13
points and four rebounds from junior center Katherine Jamnick
(Soudan, Minn.) but it would not be enough as the Beavers were held to
a season low 27-percent from the floor (16-59) in a 76-53 loss to the
Northern State University Wolves in BSU’s final game of the
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) HoopsFest in Sioux
Falls, S.D.
In addition to Jamnick’s career night, Colleen McKay (So.,
F, Barnum, Minn.) netted twelve points. Jamnick and McKay combined for
11 of BSU’s 16 made field goals as Jamnick was 6-of-13 (.462)
while McKay went 5-for-10 (.500) from the field.
The
Wolves were led by a quartet of players who reached double-digit points
totals. Emily Becken led the charge with a team-high of 13 points while
Krista Rabenberg chipped in 12 with Jodi Reinschmidt adding 11 and
Mikayla Barondeau pouring in 10 to round out the double-digit scoring
for the Wolves. Rabenberg led all players with 16 rebounds to go with
her 12 points for the games lone double-double. Becken led all players
with four assists.
Bemidji State’s Heidi Matzke
(Sr., G, Red Lake Falls, Minn.) came out hot as she gave BSU a 5-0 lead
just 1:17 into the contest. A layup at 15:43 of the half by Rabenberg
tied the contest at 7-7 and a layup by Brittany Euerle on the Wolves
next possession gave NSU its first lead of the game at 9-7 with 15:15
left in the half.
With the score tied at
10-10 the Wolves went on a 10-0 run over a 2:08 span giving NSU a 20-10
lead. BSU battled back and closed NSU’s lead to five (20-15) on a
layup by Jamnick but the Wolves closed out the final 7:14 of the first
frame on a 13-5 run pushing its lead to 13 (33-20) heading into the
break.
Northern State opened the second half
with an 25-7 run to stretch its lead to 31 before nine minutes expired
in the second half. The Beavers were not done. During the next 10:20
BSU gnawed at the NSU lead out scoring the Wolves 24-14 and cutting its
deficit to 21 (72-51) on a pair of Kristina Salscheider
(Sr., G, Cass Lake, Minn.) free-throws. But that was all the Beavers
could muster as they would run out of time and drop a 76-53 decision to
the Northern State Wolves.
BSU finished the night 16-for-59 (.271) overall converting 5-of-19 (.263) shots from beyond the arc.
NSU
won the battle on the boards collecting 52 rebounds to BSU’s 36
and took better care of the ball turning it over 15 times while forcing
19 BSU miscues.
BSU falls to 8-41 all-time versus the Northern State Wolves and are currently on a two game losing streak to NSU.
The
Beavers (2-4) will keep their bags packed as they will head to
Moorhead, Minn. for their 2008-09 Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference opener. The battle versus the MSU Moorhead Dragons is slated
for an 6 p.m. start Friday at Alex Nemzek Hall. Saturday, the team will
