BEMIDJI, Minn. - Two players notched multiple points and
Zuzana Tomcikova
(Fr., Bratislava, Slovakia) posted another fantastic game in net, but a
late goal sent the game into overtime and the University of North
Dakota was able to steal a 4-3 win from the Bemidji State University
women's hockey team Saturday evening at John Glas Fieldhouse.
Bemidji
State now moves to 1-15-2 overall and 0-14 in Western Collegiate Hockey
Association play, while the Fighting Sioux improves to 10-7-1 overall
and 7-6-1 in the WCHA.
The Beavers came out
the aggressor after narrowly dropping Game One of the series 2-1. The
home squad had one of its best periods of the season in the first,
holding UND to just two shots while attempting nine.
After
possessing the puck for long stretches and getting quality chances at
net, Bemidji State was finally able to break the scoring drought with
just five seconds to play in the period when Montana Vichorek
(Fr., Moose Lake, Minn.) fired a shot from the point on the power play.
The puck deflected off a UND defender and past the diving netminder. Kaylee Keys (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Erin Cody (So., Roseville, Minn.) assisted on Vichorek’s first career goal.
The
Beavers might have held the Fighting Sioux to just two shots in the
first, but the road squad came firing back with 21 in the second and
two goals, both on the power play. Sara Dagenais scored 4:40 into the
frame and Stephanie Roy slid a rebound past a diving Tomcikova with
just eight seconds remaining in the frame. Randi Motsko, Melissa
Jaques, Kelly Lewis and Casie Hanson all had assists on the goals.
It
didn’t take long for BSU to answer, when Cody tipped in a rebound
just 13 seconds into the third to square the game at 2-2. Erin Johnson (So., Farmington, Minn.) and Vichorek assisted on the goal.
Annie Bauerfeld (So., Woodbury, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season 13:11 into the final period off assists from Franny Dorr (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) and Lauren Williams (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) to give the home team the 3-2 advantage.
It
looked as if Bemidji State might take down North Dakota for its first
conference win of the season, but Jaques decided this would not be the
Beavers’ day.
She scored an
extra-attacker goal with just 1:21 remaining in the game and hit home
the game winner 2:56 into the overtime session to give her team the
series sweep and take away any chance at BSU earning a point in the
first half of the season.
Bemidji State was
outshot 46-27 in the game, and was held shotless in the overtime
session. UND was 2-for-6 on the power play while the Beavers went
1-for-6, scoring their second power-play marker in the last four games.
Tomcikova saved 42 shots, and finished the
weekend with 88 saves and a .926 save percentage. She fell to 1-12-1 on
the season after allowing four goals.
Cody
notched her team-leading seventh goal and sixth assist to increase her
team lead to 13 points on the season. Vichorek recorded her
first-career two-point game, and Williams’ assist was her
first-career point.
Dorr recorded her first point of the season, and Keys added her second-career helper.
The
Beavers will take a three-week break to observe the holidays, and will
be back in action Jan. 2-3 at Robert Morris University. The two teams
will hit the ice at 6:35 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., respectively.
