DULUTH, Minn. - After being shut out for four-consecutive matchups, the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team found the back of the net twice in a 5-2 loss to the No. 4-ranked Minnesota Duluth Friday night at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.

The Beavers dropped their 11th-straight game to fall to 1-12-2 overall this season and 0-11 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, while the Bulldogs improved to 10-5-2 overall and 6-5-2 in WCHA action.

Elin Holmlov knocked in the first goal of the game just 56 seconds into the contest. She was assisted by Jocelyne Larocque and Pernilla Winberg, and Minnesota Duluth would never relinquish the early lead. The goal by Holmlov was the fastest that BSU has allowed to start a game this season, but the Beavers have allowed only four goals in the first five minutes of a game all year.

Heidi Peltarri scored her second of the season 3:46 into the first off an assist by Tawni Mattila, but Bemidji State answered at the 7:13 mark when Erin Johnson (So., Farmington, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season with help from Annie Bauerfeld (So., Woodbury, Minn.) and Erin Cody (So., Roseville, Minn.). The marker was the fifth power-play goal of the year for BSU.

Bemidji State skated to a 2-1 deficit to end the first period, but the Bulldogs put away any hopes of a comeback with two second-period goals.

Laura Fridfinnson scored at the 2:26 mark with assists from Saara Tuominen and Sara O’Toole, and Haley Irwin notched a power-play marker 17:28 into the frame with assists going to Holmlov and Larocque.

Winberg scored 13:22 into the third period off assists from Holmlov and Larocque to end the scoring for Minnesota Duluth, and Bemidji State notched the final marker of the game with 4:24 remaining when Bauerfeld scored her second of the season off assists from Ashley Leopold (Jr., Afton, Minn.) and Montana Vichorek (Fr., Moose Lake, Minn.).

Bemidji State goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova (Fr., Bratislava, Slovakia) was one shy of her career high with 46 saves, while allowing a career-high five goals. She moved to 1-9-1 this year.

Bauerfeld recorded her third multi-point game this season, which ties Cody for the team lead in that category. Cody, the team’s leading scorer, assisted on her fifth goal of the year while hitting the 10-point mark. She had 10 points all of last season. Johnson has seven points this season and she had just four points all last year.

Leopold notched her first point of the season and Vichorek recorded her fourth assist of the year.

BSU was 1-for-3 on the power play, while Minnesota Duluth went 2-for-8 with a man advantage. Bemidji State was outshot 51-14, and the last time an opponent had at least 50 shots on goal against the Beavers was Oct. 27 of this year when No. 1 Wisconsin had 51.

The two goals by Bemidji State were the most scored against a Bulldog squad since Oct. 20, 2006, a span of 10 games.

BSU will try and find that elusive first conference win Saturday in Game Two of the series with UMD. The puck will drop at the DECC at 7:07 p.m.
