BEMIDJI, Minn. -
Annie Bauerfeld
(Fr., Woodbury, Minn.) scored her third goal of the season for the
Bemidji State women’s hockey team just 55 seconds into
Friday’s 5-1 loss to the No. 4-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers at
John Glas Fieldhouse.
The goal gave the
Beavers their first lead over Minnesota this season and their first
lead over a ranked opponent since a 6-2 loss Nov. 2 at then-No. 10 Ohio
State. It was also the fastest goal of the year for BSU.
Franny Dorr
(So., Roseville, Minn.) initially controlled the puck behind the UM
net, and she passed it along the boards to Bauerfeld. She skated in
front of the net and took a shot that was saved, but then she calmly
collected her rebound and poured it into the back of the net.
The assist for Dorr was her second of the season.
Unfortunately,
the goal only mattered in the final score, because the Gophers scored
five unanswered goals in the first two periods to put any hopes of a
Bemidji State upset to bed.
Gigi Marvin
scored the first goal for Minnesota at the 11:06 mark of the opening
frame with assists from Emily West and Brittany Francis. West notched a
goal with 3:24 remaining in the first to give UM its first lead of the
game. Francis and Anya Miller assisted on the play.
Kelli
Blankenship added another just 1:39 into the second period and was
assisted by Jenelle Philipczyk. Melanie Gagnon and Philipczyk each
scored power-play goals in the second period with assists coming from
Michelle Maunu, Francis and Jen Schoullis to close out the scoring.
Emily Brookshaw
(Sr., Webster, Wisc.) played all but three seconds in net for Bemidji
State, saving 34 shots. Kim Hanlon recorded the win after saving 11
shots and allowing the one goal to Bauerfeld.
BSU
was outshot 39-12, but won faceoffs 33-32. Minnesota was 2-for-5 on the
power play and the Beavers went 0-for-3. There were no third period
goals by either team and nobody went into the box, either.
The
series finale between the Beavers and Gophers takes place Saturday at
2:07 p.m. at the Glas. The game will be televised by KBSU Channel 17
with Scott Williams calling the action and Eric Monsrud providing color
commentary. The game will also be broadcast live on the B2 network for
a price of $6.
