Bemidji State falls to the University of Mary, 86-64

BISMARCK, N.D. (Activity Center) (box score) - The University of Mary’s Activity Center has always been a tough place for BSU to play and Friday, the Bemidji State University women’s basketball team again struggled to play its game, dropping the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest to the Marauders, 86-64.

UM hit five more three-pointers, got to the line five more times than the Beavers and turned 20 BSU turnovers into 21 points on their way to their 15th win of the season (15-9) and the team’s 10th in NSIC play (10-6).

Katherine Jamnick (So., C, Soudan, Minn.) led the Beavers posting a career-high 13 points on a career-high six field goals on 11 field goal attempts while pulling down four rebounds in 18 minutes of play. Stephanie Peterson (Sr., C, Bismarck, N.D.) and Heidi Matzke (Jr., G, Red Lake Falls, Minn.) each netted 10 points to join Jamnick in double-figure scoring. Colleen McKay (Fr., F, Barnum, Minn.) led the Beavers with seven rebounds.

UM’s Nicci Landdeck and Liz Sipma led the Marauders with 15 points apiece. Landdeck hit 6-of-12 shots from the field while Sipma shot an efficient 7-of-11. Kayla Rogers, Kristin Bear, and Ashley Fridley rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Beavers as they added in 13, 11, and 11 points, respectively. Anna Skala recorded a game-high 10 rebounds while chipping in with eight points.

As the game got underway, a Skala layup followed by two Skala free-throws gave the Marauders a 4-0 lead just :43 seconds into the game. The teams traded baskets for the next 5:26 until a old-fashioned three-point play by Matzke gave the Beavers their first lead of the contest with 13:51 left in the contest (10-8).

The Marauders regained the lead on its next possession on a three-pointer by Kristin Bear. UM held the lead for the next 2:57 until Matzke hit a layup to give the Beavers their second lead of the first half (19-18) at the 10:44 mark of the frame. Once again the Marauders over took the lead on two successful free-throw attempts by Fridley to give UM a 20-19 lead. The Marauders outscored the Beavers 15-9 in the final 9:45 of the half to give them its largest lead of the half, 35-28 going into the intermission.

The Marauders came out in the second half and pushed its lead to 10-points on their first possession of the half. Rodgers sunk her second three-point field goal of the game to give UM its largest lead of the game (38-28). BSU traded baskets with UM for the first two minutes of the half but UM went on a 38-17 run over the next 14-minutes to push its lead to 31, 85-54 with 3:59 left in the contest.

BSU trimmed the Marauders lead by nine points in the final four minutes of the game, but still surrendered a 22-point, 86-64 defeat at the hands of UM.

The University of Mary shot 50.9 percent from the field (29-57), 75.0 percent from the three-point line (9-12) and 73.1 percent from the free-throw line (19-26) while the Beavers were just above freezing shooting 33.3 percent from the field (23-69), 21.1 percent from behind the arc (4-19) and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line (14-18).

The University of Mary continues its dominance over the Beavers since moving to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) with the win. The Marauders are 4-0 versus the Beavers since moving to the NSIC and are 4-1 versus the Beavers all-time.

Bemidji State (12-12; 8-7 NSIC) will be back in action tomorrow night when the team travels to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on the Northern State Wolves at Wachs Arena at 6:00 p.m.
