Brookshaw saves 42, Bemidji State falls 4-0 to No. 5 Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team ended its streak of six games without being shut out Friday afternoon at the Kohl Center in a 4-0 defeat to the No. 5-ranked University of Wisconsin Badgers.

Wisconsin came out firing on all cylinders and wouldn’t allow the Beavers to control the puck at all during the opening frame. They only possessed the puck in the UW zone on limited occasions, and were unable to attempt a shot in the first period.

Wisconsin, however, attempted 15 shots, with two of them going into the back of the net.

Kyla Sanders notched the first goal of the game at the 11:18 mark. Angie Keseley scored a power-play goal at the 1:39 later, and the Badgers took an early 2-0 lead they would not relinquish. Kesely and Jasmine Giles assisted on the first goal, and Jinelle Zaugg and Erika Lawler helped on the second.

Bemidji State was able to manage four shots in the second period, but again didn’t look like the team that shut out these same Badgers on Nov. 24. Kayla Hagen notched a goal early in the period with assists from Mallory Deluce and Zaugg to put Wisconsin ahead 3-0.

The Beavers came out in the third period and looked like a totally different team. They pressured the UW zone and got multiple solid looks at the net, even though they were unable to get one to go in. Zaugg recorded a goal with 3:11 to play off assists by Meghan Duggan and Alycia Matthews.

BSU attempted seven shots in the period for a total of 11 in the game. The Badgers had 46 shots.

Carissa Ketcher (Fr., Mound Westonka, Minn.) and Brooke Collins (Jr., Pilot Mound, Manitoba) led the way for the Beavers with two shots apiece.

Emily Brookshaw (Sr., Webster, Wisc.) had another great game in net for BSU, saving 42 shots while giving up the four goals. Jessie Vetter saved all 11 shots faced and recorded the win for Wisconsin.

Bemidji State tied its low for the season in penalties, only committing two for a total of just four minutes. Wisconsin had only one penalty, and the three total penalties in the game were a season low for a BSU game.

The Beavers wrap up the series Saturday at 2:07 p.m. at the Eagle’s Nest in Verona, Wis.
