ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University
softball team scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning,
but Upper Iowa answered with two runs in the bottom of the extra frame
to take the game 4-3 Sunday morning in the final day of the Husky Dome
Tournament.
BSU scored in both the fourth
and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Peacocks responded by
tying the game in the bottom of the sixth.
After neither team could take the game in regulation, Bridget Smith
(Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) crossed the plate for what would have been the
game-winner. Unfortunately for Bemidji State, Upper Iowa was able to
steal the victory.
The Beavers outhit UIU 8-4, and only committed one error to four by the Peacocks.
Mara Johnson (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.) was the only Beaver to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 from the plate. She and Kasey Callison (Jr., Eagle River, Alaska) had the two BSU runs batted in, and Johnson, Smith and Jamie Ford (So., Edina, Minn.) scored the three runs.
Allison Willard
(Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) pitched 5.2 innings and allowed only one hit
and gave up only one earned run. She struck out three and walked five
in the no-decision. Kristin Paine (Sr., Chisholm,
Minn.) pitched the final two innings and allowed three hits and gave up
the game-winning runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Bemidji State moves to 1-4 on the season, and finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
