MANKATO, Minn. -
Tara Hiscock (Sr,
Turtle River, Minn.) tipped the puck to herself and rifled a
short-handed shot past the Minnesota State University goaltender to
help lead the Bemidji State women’s hockey team to a 3-1 loss
Friday night at All Seasons Arena.
The
Beavers played a strong first period, possessing the puck for long
stretches at a time. They attempted nine first-frame shots, but, even
though they had a couple of nice looks, were unable to find the back of
the net.
The momentum that Bemidji State had during the opening frame was taken away right at the end of the period when Erin Johnson
(Fr, Farmington, Minn.) was whistled for checking. Her penalty expired
with 1:08 remaining in the first stanza, and it looked as if the
Beavers might get some momentum back, but Erin Cody
(Fr., Roseville, Minn.) had an interference penalty with 48 seconds
remaining, and BSU had to end the period on the penalty kill.
The
second period was more of the same for BSU. After killing the Cody
penalty, the Beavers found a few more decent looks at the net but were
unable to light up scoreboard.
Lisa Edman
scored 14:31 into the period, and she was assisted by Christina Lee and
Nina Tikkinen. Tikkinen took the puck in the Maverick zone, dumped it
ahead to Lee, who then passed it right in front of the net to Edman on
a 2-on-1. She had an open look at the goal and was able to put it in.
BSU was finally able to get on the scoreboard 11:54 into the third period, after Lisa Kissick (Jr., Carman, Manitoba) went into the box for obstruction interference.
The
Beavers were trying hard to kill the penalty, and that’s when
Hiscock found the opportunity to score her third goal of the season.
She stole the puck from the defender at the top of the zone, and passed
it up the boards to herself as she ran around a defender. Hiscock
hustled to get it, beat the defender to the puck, and then beat their
goaltender with a bullet shot on the stick side. She was unassisted on
her team-leading 31st career goal.
It
didn’t take long for MSU to answer after BSU killed off the rest
of Kissick’s penalty, as Amanda Stohr notched the game-winner at
the 10:33 mark. Kala Buganski assisted on her goal.
Stohr
netted an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining to give MSU the
final of 3-1. She was assisted by Minnesota State goaltender Britni
Kehler.
Emily Brookshaw
(Sr., Webster, Wisc.) battled between the pipes the entire game, saving
29 shots. She couldn’t save them all, however, as the three she
gave up proved to be the deciding factors. Kehler earned the victory,
saving 32 shots and allowing the short-handed goal.
Hiscock netted Bemidji State’s third short-handed goal of the season. The first was scored by Julie Rising
(Fr., Millbrae, Calif.) in the first game of the season at John Glas
Fieldhouse against these same Mavericks. The other was scored by Cody.
Hiscock
also scored her second-career short-handed goal, moving her into a tie
for fourth place in BSU history in that category.
The
Beavers went into the penalty box six times, but held the Mavericks
scoreless. BSU went 0-for-2 on its power-play opportunities.
Bemidji
State wraps up the series with the Mavericks Saturday at 3:07 p.m. The
game can be heard on ListentotheBeavers.com with play-by-play action
called by Kelly Schultz.
