DULUTH, Minn. (Bulldog Park) -- The Bemidji State
University baseball team saw its season-long three-game winning streak
come to an end today as the University of Minnesota Duluth and the
Beavers collided in their second non-conference double-dip of the
season. The Bulldogs completed the doubleheader sweep of the Beavers
taking the first game 11-0 and the night cap 7-6, in eight innings.
In
game 1, UMD provided all the offense as the Bulldogs platted runs in
every inning but the first to shutout the Beavers for the second time
this season. Justin Baker drove in the first run of the game for the
Bulldogs when he single to left center field to score Ty Fadness from
second base after he reached off a double. David Olson lead the third
inning off with a solo home run pushing UMD’s lead to 2-0 with his
third homer of the season.
The Bulldogs
platted two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to stretch their
lead to 6-0 and then exploded for a five run sixth to give the Beavers
its largest loss of the season, 11-0.
UMD pounded out 13 hits to just five for the Beavers in game 1.
Matt Fossen
(Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) took the loss for the Beavers allowing four runs
(three earned) with one strikeout and two walks in four innings of work
dropping his record to 1-3. Bryan Jamieson (Fr., Maplewood, Minn.) and Jeremy Monson
(Fr., Pierz, Minn.) each pitched an inning of relief as Jamieson
allowed two runs (zero earned) off three hits while Monson allowed five
runs (fiver earned) off four hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The
combination of John Leitch and Dallas Jagiela shutdown the Beavers
offense. Leitch picked up his first win of the season allowing just
four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings of
work. Jagiela worked two innings giving up just one hit with five
strikeouts.
UMD was led offensively by Tony Doherty who was 3-for-4 from the plate with four RBI.
In
game 2, UMD lit its side of the scoreboard first by plating one run in
its first at bat. Bryan Denisen singled to center field and advanced to
third as he stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball.
Josh Threlkeld doubled down the left field line to drive in Denisen
giving UMD the early 1-0 lead.
BSU responded in the top of the second scoring three runs to take the early lead.
Mike Wagner (Sr., Plymouth, N.H.) and Tony Samuelson (Sr., Pine City, Minn.) started the rally each drawing walks. Nick Jelacie
(Fr., Brainerd, Minn.) provided the blow as he launched a three run
homer to give BSU a 3-1 advantage. The home run was Jelacie’s second of
the season.
UMD came back to tie it in the
home half of the second platting two runs to even the score at 3-3.
Luke Johnson started the inning with a double then advanced to third on
a wild pitch and scored on a error by BSU pitcher Bryant Salamone (Sr.,
Rockford, Ill.). Tony Doherty doubled driving in the second run of the
inning to tie the game at 3-3 after two innings of play.
BSU regained the lead in the third as Ryan Johnson (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) led the inning off with a double to left field and advanced to third off a ground out by Rich Bohannan (Sr., Goodyear, Ariz.) and then scored when UMD shortstop Andrew Heieie committed an error.
BSU
pushed its lead to 6-3 in the fifth when Bohannan hit a two run homer
for his third home run of the season. After Bohannan’s blast BSU loaded
the bases with just one out but the Bulldogs brought in Andrew Vlasak
in relief and closed the door on the Beavers attempt to increase their
lead.
David Olson and Luke Johnson each
produced RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to close the Beavers
lead to 6-5. The Bulldogs played small ball in the sixth inning to tie
the contest. Mike Brunette led the inning off with a single and then
was pinch ran for by Cole Hytjan. Hytjan advanced to second on a
sacrifice ground out by Tyler Erickson and then advanced to third on a
single by Tony Doherty. Bryan Denison pushed the tying run across with
a RBI ground out to the shortstop to even the game at 6-6.
Brian
Burman played hero for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the eighth inning
when he hit a walk off home run to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 win to
complete the doubleheader sweep of the Beavers. The home run was
Burman’s second of the season.
The Beavers used four pitchers in the contest. Bryant Salamone
(Sr., Rockford, Ill) saw his first action of the season allowing three
runs (two earned) off four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Randy Amos (Jr., Wilmington, N.C.), Karl Willers (So., Slayton, Minn.) and Colton Smith
(Fr., Waddell, Ariz.) all pitched in relief. Amos worked two innings
allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Willers
allowed three runs (three earned) on five hits with one strikeout in
two innings of work while Smith fell to 0-1 on the season allowing one
run (one earned) off one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
Josh Foreman worked two innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts for his first win of the season for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs racked up 11 hits in the win with Doherty, Denisen, and Johnson going 2-for-4 in the game.
The UMD sweep drops Bemidji State to 9-16-1. Minnesota Duluth improved to 15-14.
The
Beavers are back on the road this weekend with a four-game Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference series versus the Northern State University
Wolves in Aberdeen, S.D. First pitch of the Saturday double-dip is set
for 1 p.m. while Sunday’s twinbill begins at 12 p.m. at Fossum Field.
