MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
Franny Dorr
(Jr., Roseville, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season, but it
wasn’t enough as the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team was
defeated 5-1 by the No. 1-ranked University of Minnesota Golden Gophers
Friday night at Ridder Arena.
The Beavers
struggled to find offense as Minnesota controlled the puck and outshot
BSU 49-17 (the first game of the series earlier in the year saw BSU get
outshot 49-16), but the road squad fought for the entire 60 minutes and
was able to net its first goal against the Gophers this season.
Bemidji
State fell to 5-16-2 on the year and 2-15-0 in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association. The Gophers ended BSU’s four-game win streak and
increased their own nation-best win streak to 15 games to improve to
20-2-1 overall and 15-1-1 in the WCHA.
Monique
Lamoureux put the Gophers up 2-0 after the first period with goals at
both the 11:43 mark and the 17:13 mark. Her sister Jocelyne Lamoureux
assisted on both goals while Terra Rasmussen and Chelsey Jones each
provided the other assist on the two goals.
It
only took Bemidji State one minute into the second frame to respond,
with the first goal starting with a faceoff win in the offensive zone.
Erin Johnson (So., Farmington, Minn.) won the draw in the left circle and the puck went to Ashley Leopold
(Jr., Afton, Minn.) at the point. She fired at shot at the net and it
was deflected by both Johnson and a UM defender. The puck went through
the slot to Dorr, who was waiting to shoot it into the back of the net.
Dorr scored her sixth-career goal and
recorded her 10th-career point. Johnson helped on her team-leading
eighth goal of the season and Leopold recorded her fourth helper of the
year.
Any thoughts of a Beaver comeback was
soon dispelled when both Sarah Erickson and Kelly Seeler scored to give
the home team a 4-1 advantage heading into the final stanza. Michelle
Maunu, Kelli Blankenship, Brittany Francis and Emily West all assisted
on the two goals.
Minnesota wrapped up the
scoring when Jocelyne Lamoureux scored a power-play marker with 2:02
remaining in the third period, and the Gophers went on to win 5-1. Anne
Schleper and Jen Schoullis assisted on the goal.
BSU netminder Zuzana Tomcikova
(Fr., Bratislava, Slovakia) saved 44 shots and allowed five goals. She
lost her first decision in four games and moved to 4-13-1 on the season.
UM goalie Jenny Lura saved 16 shots and allowed one goal to improve to 10-1-0 on the season.
BSU went 0-for-7 on the power play and UM went 2-for-7.
Bemidji State will do battle with the Gophers in the series finale at 6:07 p.m. Saturday at Ridder.=
