MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
Annie Bauerfeld
(So., Woodbury, Minn.) scored her sixth goal of the season as the
Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell 11-1 to the No.
1-ranked University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Saturday evening at
Ridder Arena.
The Beavers were swept by UM
after winning four in a row and now sit at 5-17-2 on the season and
2-16 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota extends
its nation-best win streak to 16 games, and the Gophers are now 21-2-1
overall and 16-1-1 in the WCHA.
UM jumped out
to a quick 3-1 lead after the first period, and the Gopher attack was
spearheaded by sisters Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux. Monique scored
just 19 seconds into the game and Jocelyne recorded a marker 5:05
later. Each sister assisted on the others’ goal.
Jaimie
Horton put Minnesota ahead 3-0 at the 8:06 mark and the Gophers were
off and running. Alexandra Zebro assisted on Horton’s first goal of the
season.
Despite being down early, the Beavers
didn’t give up and were awarded a power-play opportunity 14:28 into the
frame after Brittany Francis was whistled for interference.
Bemidji State took advantage of the extra attacker by firing two shots on net, with the first going to Erin Cody
(So., Roseville, Minn.). The rebound bounced right in front to
Bauerfeld, who backhanded a shot over the Minnesota netminder’s glove
for her sixth goal of the season.
Marlee Wheelhouse (Fr., Crookston, Minn.) recorded the other assist. Cody tied Erin Johnson (So., Farmington, Minn.) for the team lead with eight assists this season and Wheelhouse tallied her fourth assist of the year.
In
the second period, Monique, Sarah Erickson, Horton and Kelly Seeler all
scored goals to put Minnesota ahead 7-1. Jocelyne, Monique, Jen
Schoullis (2), Dagney Willey, Terra Rasmussen, Emily West and Chelsey
Jones all recorded assists.
Minnesota scored
four goals in the third period to round out the scoring. Monique scored
once and Jocelyne scored twice to both complete their hat tricks. Laura
May also scored. Zebro (3), Monique, Schoullis and Willey all recorded
assists.
BSU freshman goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova
(Bratislava, Slovakia) saved 17 shots and allowed a career-high six
goals to fall to 4-14-1 on the season. She was pulled midway through
the second period for Alana McElhinney (Fr., Calgary,
Alberta), who saw her first action since recording her first-career win
Jan. 3 against Robert Morris. McElhinney saved 15 shots and allowed
five goals. UM netminder Jenny Lura saved 13 shots and allowed the
Bauerfeld goal to improve to 11-1-0 on the season. Kim Hanlon relieved
Lura in the third period and saved eight shots.
Johnson
and Cody have both recorded at least one point in each of the last five
series’, and Bauerfeld has notched a point in four of the last five.
BSU has now gone 10-straight games without being shutout, its longest
such streak since midway through the 2006-07 season.
The 11 goals were the most allowed since falling 10-3 to Wisconsin Dec. 3, 2005.
The Beavers went 1-for-9 on the power play and the Gophers were 2-for-5. BSU was outshot 43-22.
Bemidji
State will return to action next weekend (Jan. 23-24) when Ohio State
University comes to John Glas Fieldhouse in a crucial WCHA matchup. If
BSU sweeps the Buckeyes, then it will be just two points away from
catching the team from Columbus, Ohio, in the conference standings.
This will be Alumni Weekend and both faceoffs are set for 2:07 p.m.
