MINNEAPOLIS
- The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team had its
season come to an end in a 5-1 defeat to the No. 1-ranked University of
Minnesota in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey
Association playoffs Saturday evening at Ridder Arena.
The
Beavers ended the 2008-09 campaign with a 6-25-5 overall record with a
3-22-3-2 mark in the WCHA. The Gophers move on to the WCHA Final
Face-Off with a 30-3-3 mark and a 23-2-3-2 in the WCHA.
BSU
played phenomenal hockey in the first period, throwing away everything
the Minnesota offensive attack could dish out. The Beavers were able to
skate to a 0-0 tie despite being outshot 15-6.
All the positive vibes garnered in the first period were quickly eliminated in the second.
Jocelyne
Lamoureux put UM on the board first 3:56 into the second frame with an
assist to Rachael Drazan. Twin sister Monique Lamoureux, the leading
scorer in the country, notched goals at both the 7:04 and 17:50 marks
to give the Gophers a 3-0 advantage heading into the third. Jocelyne
assisted on both goals, and Michelle Maunu helped on Monique’s first
marker.
Gigi Marvin added a fourth 2:40 into the final period with help from Chelsey Jones.
BSU made sure to avoid the shutout, though, when the top three scorers hooked up for a power-play marker 4:12 into the third.
Erin Cody
(So., W, Roseville, Minn.) fired a shot from the middle of the left
faceoff circle that was initially saved. The puck flew up and Annie Bauerfeld (So., W, Woodbury, Minn.) tried to pick it out of the air and get it past the goalie. She was unsuccesful, but in the fray Erin Johnson (So., W, Farmington, Minn.) was able to sneak it past a few Gophers into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season.
Jocelyne scored again at the 14:37 mark with assists to Monique and Anne Schleper to round out the scoring.
Bemidji
State went 1-for-6 on the power-play, and Minnesota was 0-for-4. UM
outshot BSU 34-23, and the Minnesota shots were the least against BSU
by a ranked WCHA opponent this season.
Zuzana Tomcikova
(Fr., Bratislava, Slovakia) had another fantastic game between the
pipes for the Beavers, but she couldn’t quite handle the Gopher attack.
She stopped 29 shots, but allowed five goals in 60 minutes. She
finished the year with a 5-22-4 mark, and her 1,025 saves mark just the
second time in school history a Beaver has eclipsed the 1,000-save
plateau (Emily Brookshaw, 1,072, 2007-08).
Jenny
Lura played the first 50:31 in net for the Gophers, saving 15 shots and
allowing the one goal. She was relieved by Kim Hanlon, who saved seven
shots.
Brooke Collins (Sr.,
D, Pilot Mound, Manitoba) broke the school record for career games
played, finishing with 144 tilts. The old mark of 143 was set last year
by both Tara Hiscock and Haley Balcom. Monica Rawlings
(Sr., C, Maplewood, Minn.) finished with 135 games, which is ninth on
the school list. Collins also has the school record for most
consecutive games played, which also sits at 144 contests.
