JAMESTOWN, N.D. (Jack Brown Stadium) -- The Bemidji
State University baseball team ran into a buzz saw as the Jamestown
College Jimmies pounded out 26 hits with six home runs, six doubles and
one triple to down the Beavers 26-3 at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown,
N.D. Thursday afternoon.
Jamestown kicked off
the game with a six-run first and never looked back. A two-RBI home run
from Nick Meehan and a two-RBI double by Kyle Montgomery were the big
blows in the first, giving the Jimmies a lead they’d not
relinquish.
The hosts added six runs in the
second and three in the third, then blew the game wide open with a nine
run fifth inning. A grand slam home run by Jeremy Newman was the
backbreaker in the deluge, but two wild pitches and two hit batsmen and
five walks by the pitching staff didn’t help BSU’s cause.
Ryan
Illiff allowed all three of BSU’s runs in the third innings. P.J.
McIntee (Sr., 2B, Randolph, Minn.) led the inning off with a single and
then moved to second when Ryan Johnson (So., OF, Bemidji, Minn.)
walked. A wild pitch allowed both runners to move up a base. McIntee
scored BSU’s first run of the contest off a RBI ground out by
Colton Smith (So., 3B/RHP, Waddell, Ariz.). Ryan Sander (So., INF/RHP,
St. James, Minn.) drove in the Beavers second run of the game with a
RBI single and Nick Jelacie (So., OF, Brainerd, Minn.) drove in
BSU’s final run of the game with a two out RBI single.
Eight
Jimmie batters recorded double-digit hits led by Tim Penner who went
4-for-4 with six RBI, three runs scored and two home runs.
Tyler
Rice started the game for Jamestown on the mound working 2.0 innings
giving up just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Ryan Illiff
surrendered all three of BSU runs in the third off four hits with two
strikeouts and a walk. Max Rusch, James Castle, Miles Ethier and Austin
Bauer combined to work four innings out of the bullpen giving up just
two Beaver hits with one walk and four punch outs.
Ethan
Branum (Fr., LHP, Brainerd, Minn.) started for the Beavers, but lasted
just 1.2 innings. He yielded to Bryan Buhr (Sr., RHP, Frazee, Minn.) in
the second, but not before allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on nine
hits. Buhr fared no better, pitching 2.2 innings allowing 12 runs (nine
earned) on nine hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Gebur
(So., RHP, New Prague, Minn.) pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing
three runs (two earned) on three hits.
Sander finished with two hits to lead the Beavers at the plate. Smith, Sander, and Jelacie each picked up a RBI in the game.
With the win the Jimmies improve to 4-2 in the all-time series with BSU.
The
loss drops Bemidji State to 13-31 on the season, while Jamestown
College improves to 21-6. Bemidji State will be back in action this
weekend (Apr. 25-26) when the Beavers host Concordia University, St.
Paul in a four-game series from the BSU Baseball Field. Both Saturday
and Sunday’s double-headers are slated for a noon start. Sunday,
Bemidji State will celebrate its senior day from the BSU Baseball Field.
