WINONA, Minn. (WSU Alumni Field) - The Bemidji
State University softball team struggled defensively against No. 9
Winona State University Friday, falling in two Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference games against the Warriors 12-4 and 12-3.
In
the first game of the doubleheader, both teams exchanged runs in the
first before the Beavers (7-11, 2-4 NSIC) took a 4-1 lead after two
innings. Winona State (24-7, 4-2 NSIC) plated five runs in both the
fourth and sixth innings and used a 17-hit performance to run away from
BSU, who recorded eight hits.
Courtney Anderson (Fr., P, Virginia, Minn.) lasted 4.1 innings and gave up seven runs (two earned) on nine hits. Jamie Lund
(So., P, Grantsburn, Wisc.) pitched the final 1.2, giving up five more
runs on eight hits. Stacey Struzynski was run after only 1.1 innings,
giving up four runs on five hits for WSU. Alex Chichila threw the final
4.2 innings and didn’t allow a run on three hits.
Bridget Smith
(Jr., SS, International Falls, Minn.) went 2-for-3 from the plate to
pace the Beavers, and she also drove home a run. Annie Stuedemann went
4-for-4 and scored three times for Winona State. Five other Warriors
had multiple hits, and two of those had three RBI.
BSU
took a 2-0 lead after the first inning of the nightcap, but three runs
in two innings for WSU gave the home team a 3-2 lead, and two in the
fifth and seven in the sixth would be enough to do away with Bemidji
State, who was outhit 12-6.
Alison Willard
(Sr., P, Hutchinson, Minn.) went 5.1 innings on the mound for BSU,
giving up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits. Lund allowed four
runs in 0.1 innings, and Jordan Anderson (Fr., P,
Sartell, Minn.) was called upon to finish the final 0.1 inning.
Courtney Strang pitched a six-hit complete game, allowing only three
runs. She struck out 12 without walking a batter.
Kasey Callison (Sr., 1B, Eagle River, Alaska) was 2-for-2 from the plate, and Mara Johnson
(Sr., 2B, Bemidji, Minn.) went 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace BSU.
Terra Halron and Kayla Lewis both went 3-for-3, with Studemann driving
home four and Molly Bjelland scoring three times.
Bemidji State will travel to Fayette, Iowa, Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. battle with Upper Iowa University.
