DULUTH, Minn. -- The
Bemidji State baseball team fell in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader
at University of Minnesota Duluth Saturday by the scores of 6-4 and 13-6.
The Beavers (13-26, 4-18 NSIC) never led in the nine inning
game one, getting down 4-0 after two. BSU scored once in the third to make it
4-1, but a two-run eighth put the road team at a five-run deficit. The Beavers
were able to produce a threat in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs and
almost batting through the order, but UMD was able to close the door for the
6-4 victory.
Junior Dan Bauer (MIF/RHP,
Bemidji, Minn.) started for the Beavers and went the distance, throwing all
eight innings. He gave-up the six runs, five earned, on six hits with a
career-high 12 strikeouts. Senior Josh Silvernagel
(MIF, Bismark, N.D.) posted a 3-for-4 game with a run scored.
Game two was all BSU to start as the Beavers scored five
runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead. Bemidji State got the
scoring started with a double from senior Joe
Chism (OF, Great Bend, Kan.) that scored two runs. Chism advanced to third
on a play to the plate that saw freshman Lewis
Bauman (MIF, Colorado Springs, Colo.) score. Bauer then came up and fouled
out, but it was deep enough for Chism to cross the plate on the play. Junior Colton Smith (3B, Waddel, Ari.) then
started the two-out rally with a single, followed by a junior Brian Murphy (1B, Longville, Minn.) double.
The two-on, two-out situation led to a junior Nick Jelacie (OF, Brainerd, Minn.) singling to left field to score
both and give the Beavers a five-run lead.
The big inning by BSU lit a fire under the Bulldogs and it
was all UMD for the rest of the game. The home team scored one in the bottom of
the second and three in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to one at
5-4. A three-run fourth game them the 7-5 lead and then they added one more in
the fifth. The Beavers scored one in the sixth to make it an 8-6 contest, but a
five-run bottom of the sixth put the game out of hand for BSU at 13-6.
Freshman left-hander Phil
Bray (Chatfield, Minn.) started on the bump for BSU, hurling four complete
innings, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits. Junior righty Brian Jamieson (Maplewood, Minn.) relieved
Bray, allowing six runs, five earned on four hits. Murphy went 3-for-3 with a
run and an RBI, recording his first three-hit game of the season. Jelacie
batted 2-for-4 with two RBI. Chism scored twice and batted-in two, producing
his ninth double of the season.
BSU and UMD will Battle again tomorrow in Duluth in a
doubleheader starting at noon.
