GRAND FORKS, N.D. - An early Monique Lamoureux-Kolls and a
late empty netter from Jocelyne Lamoureux score were enough to send No. 5
University of North Dakota to a 2-0 win over Bemidji State University women’s
hockey. The UND win ends the season for the Beavers as they sweep BSU in the
best-of-three WCHA playoff series.
Bemidji State
ends its season with a 17-17-3 mark, the program’s best win total ever. North
Dakota improves to 22-10-3 and advances to the WCHA FINAL FACEOFF in Duluth,
Minn.
The Beavers had
19 shots to the Fighting Sioux’s 33. BSU seniors Lauren Williams (F, Eagan, Minn.) and Kimberly Lieder (D, Eagan, Minn.) paced the Beavers with three
shots apiece.
BSU had an early
chance in the game as L. Williams’ shot hit UND netmider Stephanie Ney and
bounced up to failed to find the net.
Monique
Lamoureux-Kolls gave UND an early 1-0 advantage as she tallied a netter on a
breakout. The goal was Lamouruex-Kolls’ 26th goal of the season. Her
sister, Jocelyne Lamoureux, was credited with her 48th assist of the
season on the netter. Michelle Karvinen notched her 36th assist on
the goal.
The Beavers had
an opportunity to find the equalizer as Abby
Williams (R-Jr., F, Alexandria, Minn.) played a great pass from behind the
net to Kristi King (So., F,
Stillwater, Minn.) in the kill zone. King put a strong shot on net but Ney made
a great save to keep the score in favor of UND.
Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia) had a
strong first period, giving up only one goal but making 12 saves including one
on a two-on-one break in which she was able to find the puck by her legs and
stop a prime chance for the Fighting Sioux.
The Beavers had
another opportunity to find the equalizer as Molly Arola (Jr., F, Walker, Minn.) had a breakaway chance but Ney
made a clutch save for UND.
BSU had a host of
chances on a power-play chance late in the second period but were still unable
to find that goal to knot the game.
The Beaver
defense continued to play strong through the second period as UND was unable to
add to its lead. The Fighting Sioux had nine shots on goal in the second frame.
Bemidji State had
a chance in the third period as Lieder put a blast on the net. Ney failed to
control the puck but the official’s whistle blew not allowing Rachael Kelly (Fr., F, Rosemount,
Minn.) to get to the loose puck.
The Beavers had
another opportunity with 12:40 left in the third period as L. Williams played a
pass from the boards to A. Williams in front of the net who poked it, but Ney
came up with another clutch save for the Fighting Sioux.
With over two
minutes left, Alison Parizek was called for a roughing penalty giving BSU a man
advantage. Head Coach Steve Sertich
decided to pull Tomcikova to give BSU an extra skater but the Beavers were
unable to find the net.
J. Lamoureux iced
the North Dakota victory as she tallied an empty netter beating Vichorek for
her 34th goal of the season.
Marlee Wheelhouse (Sr., D, Crookston, Minn.) set the school
record for games and played and consecutive games played at 146 in the loss as
she surpassed Annie Bauerfeld (Scofield) for the record.
Tomcikova
finished the game with 31 saves as she made several great saves throughout the
game to keep BSU in the contest. The senior netminder ends her career as the
record holder for Bemidji State for all major goaltender categories. She also
ends her career ranked No. 3 all-time in saves and No. 2 for stops in the WCHA.
BSU’s senior
class of Lieder, Alana McElhinney
(Sr., G, Calgary, Alberta), Tomcikova, Vichorek, M. Wheelhouse and L. Williams
finishes their four years as the winningest class in BSU history with 49
victories.
Bemidji State
accomplished its first-ever program ranking during the 2011-12 season and its
highest-ever ranking of No. 7. The Beavers also picked up five wins over ranked
opponents during the year.
