Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. -  Three first-period goals guided University of North Dakota to a 3-1 win over Bemidji State University Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Beavers and UND played even hockey the rest of the way but were unable to find the net as North Dakota picked up the win. Bemidji State falls to 14-14-3 (8-14-2 WCHA). UND improves to 18-9-2 (14-8-2 WCHA).

The weekend was filled with penalties as a total of 45 were called between both teams in the two games.

The Beavers were paced by Kristin Huber’s (Fr., F, Kelowna, British Columbia) five shots on goal and Sadie Lundquist (Jr., F, Cloquet, Minn.) with four shots on goal.

North Dakota’s Josefine Jakobsen would get the game off to a thunderous start as three goals were scored in the first four minutes between the two teams. Jakobsen put back a rebound of her own shot with only 20 seconds run off the game clock for her ninth goal of the season off assists from Michelle Karvinen and Jocelyne Lamouruex.

BSU answered  at the 3:46 mark of the first period right at the end of a power-play opportunity as Natasha Kostenko (Fr., F, Fannystelle, Manitoba) battled for the puck with UND goaltender Stephanie Ney after a first shot. Kostenko won the battle and put the puck past Ney for her sixth goal of the year. Assists went to Huber, her sixth of the year, and Kimberly Lieder (Sr., D, Eagan, Minn.), her fourth of the season. Lieder’s assist moved her into the top 10 all-time for BSU for points by a defenseman making it so all four of BSU’s top four defensemen are ranked in the top 10 for points by a defenseman.

UND went ahead 2-1 at the 4:13 mark of the first when the Lamoureux sisters got a 2-on-1 breakout opportunity. Monique Lamoureux-Kolls tallied the netter as she scored on Zuzana Tomcikova (Sr., G, Bratislava, Slovakia), her 23rd of the season, off the assist from her sister, J. Lamoureux.

North Dakota widened its lead to 3-1 at with 10:15 past in the first as Lamoureux-Kolls put in her second goal of the night and her 24th of the year off assists from Michelle Karvinen and Jakobsen.

The two teams played even hockey in the second period with neither team finding the net in the frame.

BSU had a 5-on-3 chance mid-way through the third period but was unable to capitalize on the man advantage which plagued them in both games at Ralph Engelstad Arena. Before the time ran out on one penalty Emily Erickson (R-Jr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) was called for slashing and a 10 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Bemidji State was 0-for-19 on the power play for the weekend.

Bemidji State had several chances at the end but was unable to get the two goals they were in search of.

Tomcikova made 25 saves on the night while allowing three goals. Ney picked up 23 saves while giving up one goal.

The Beavers have lost four straight games and have been unable to find the win column since picking up a 4-2 win over Ohio State University Jan. 14. BSU did pick up a tie against No. 2 University of Minnesota Jan. 21 at Ridder Arena.

Bemidji State will return home for the first time in nearly a month next weekend as they host University of Minnesota Duluth at Sanford Center. The game will serve as senior day for BSU’s six seniors (Kimberly Lieder, Alana McElhinney, Zuzana Tomcikova, Montana Vichorek, Marlee Wheelhouse and Lauren Williams). All six seniors will be recognized after the game Saturday.
