Pitching guides Beavers to sweep of Golden Eagles in league double dip

CROOKSTON, Minn. (UMC Baseball Field) – The Bemidji State University baseball team posted a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victories at University of Minnesota Crookston Thursday to increase its winning streak to four. The Beavers won game one 18-0 before posting a 6-1 victory in game two to improve to 16-16 overall and 7-9 in league play.

In game one, BSU scored four runs in the first and three in the second to open a 7-0 lead and never looked back, en route to the rout. The Beavers scored one in the fourth, six in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Senior righty Logan Kalis (Little Falls, Minn.) hurled a complete game shutout for the Beavers. He allowed just two hits and totaled seven strikeouts with zero walks to improve to 3-1 on the season.

BSU totaled 17 hits, led by a 4-for-6 performance from senior Jaryd Marks (RHP/1B, Cottage Grove, Minn.). He added three runs scored and two RBIs. All Beaver batters found a hit and scored a run, while six players posted two hits and seven players totaled two or more runs. Senior shortstop Lewis Baumann (Colorado Springs, Colo.) totaled four RBIs and two runs scored.

Game two was a closer affair as the Beavers were held scoreless through five and UMC held a 1-0 lead after a BSU error in the fifth.

Senior third baseman Matt Ellinghuysen (St. Charles, Minn.) got the scoring started for BSU in the sixth on a single to left that plated freshman Cody Jenkins (2B, Bemidji, Minn.). Sophomore catcher Jake Tuholsky (Big Lake, Minn.) singled to left later in the inning and scored Ellinghuysen for a 2-1 lead on the Golden Eagles.

BSU added two in the eighth when Baumann doubled to center and scored Ellinghuysen and Jenkins. In the ninth, BSU added a pair of insurance runs to improve the tally to 6-1, which would hold as the final score.

The Beavers totaled 15 hits in game two, guided by three hits from Jenkins (3-for-5) and Ellinghuysen (3-for-4). Jenkins added two runs, while Ellinghuysen posted two RBIs and a run scored.

BSU again got strong pitching, as senior right-hander Ryan VanSomeren (Milaca, Minn.) started and threw five complete. He allowed an unearned run on four hits with seven K’s and two walks. He improved to 3-1 in 2013. Junior righty Miles Campbell (Eden Prairie, Minn.) got four innings of work in and didn’t allow a hit, while fanning six.
