Bowling Green holds on for 3-2 victory and series sweep

Box Score

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSU Ice Arena) -- Bemidji State University carried play for the final 40 minutes Saturday, but an early 2-0 lead and an empty-net goal late was enough for Bowling Green State University to hold off the Beavers to earn a 3-2 victory and WCHA series sweep.

The Falcons took the first lead in the back and fourth affair at the 16:06 mark of the first period. Mitchell McLain scored on BGSU's first power-play opportunity of a penalty-riddled evening.  Less than two minutes later (17:52), Matt Pohlkamp would convert a BSU miscue into a short-handed goal--the sixth allowed by BSU this season.

In a 2-0 hole to open the second period, the Beavers hit another gear. After being out shot 12-8 in the first despite owning three power-play opportunities, including a abbreviated 5-on-3, BSU took a 15-6 edge in shots in the second frame.  At the 4:26 mark, Mitch Cain netted his second goal of the season to cut the deficit to one goal.

The score would remain 2-1 through the bulk of the third period. When BSU pulled its goaltender Andrew Walsh with just over 1:30 to play, the Falcons would get the benefit of a lucky bounce and took a 3-1 lead on an empty-net goal on puck cleared by Sean Walker that bounced off the side boards and into the net.

BSU would continue to pressure and got an extra-attacker goal off the stick of Brendan Harms, his team-leading fifth of the season, with 43 seconds to play, but the Beavers offensive burst would run out of time and the Falcons escaped with the victory, 3-2.

Bemidji State finished the night 0-for-7 on the man advantage, while BGSU finished 1-for-4.

Walsh stopped 23 shots in 58:50 of play, but allowed two BGSU goals and was tagged with the loss. He falls to 1-4-0.
