TUCSON, Ariz. (Keno Sports Complex) – The Bemidji State University baseball team has lost five straight after dropping a pair of games to Northern State University, 5-0 and 12-1, Friday in a nonconference doubleheader in Tucson, Ariz. BSU fell to 3-6 and concludes the spring trip Saturday versus Concordia University, St. Paul.
The first inning told the story of game one, as the Beavers recorded two hits, but left the bases loaded. Northern State then came up in the bottom half and produced four runs on four hits and was aided by one Bemidji State error. The four runs would serve as plenty for Wolves pitcher Colton Boucher, who allowed just two more BSU hits the rest of the game. NSU tallied its final run in the fourth to earn the 5-0 victory and shutout the Beavers for the second consecutive game.
Redshirt freshman Mark Kosmalski (RHP, Oakdale, Minn.) went the distance on the mound for BSU and suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts. The four Bemidji State hits were spread between four players.
Game two was a close battle early, as Bemidji State owned a 1-0 lead through three after freshman Collin Eckman (SS, Little Falls, Minn.) put the ball in play to allow freshman Bo Schmitz (C, St. Cloud, Minn.) to score.
NSU knotted the game in the top of the fourth, 1-1, then took a small lead at 2-1 with a run in the fifth. The Wolves used a six-run, sixth inning to break the game open and own a 9-1 lead. Northern State totaled five hits in the inning and knocked Bemidji State starter Tyler Saeugling (Jr., RHP, Dubuque, Iowa) out of the game before he could record an out. He pitched five innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts.
The Wolves tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh, en route to the 12-1 victory. BSU could only muster four hits again in the second game. Two of those came off the bat of senior outfielder Cole Bjorge (Prior Lake, Minn.), as he went 2-for-2. Bemidji State committed four errors that led to three unearned runs.
Saturday’s meeting with Concordia-St. Paul is a single, nine-inning affair, set to begin at 11 a.m.
