GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The No. 8 Bemidji State University women's hockey team upset No. 6 University of North Dakota Saturday when sophomore Alexis Joyce scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in overtime. With the win, the Beavers (6-0-2, 3-0-1 WCHA) remain undefeated on the season, while UND (4-1-1, 2-1-1) suffers their first loss.

Down 1-0 late in the third period, the Beavers staged a late comeback when Lauren Miller scored the game-tying goal with just 1:56 remaining. Joyce would eventually break the tie with just seven seconds left in overtime to complete the comeback win for BSU.

Five student-athletes registered a point in the game for BSU, and the Beavers were led by Kaitlyn Tougas who tallied an assist on each goal by BSU. Captain Hanna Moher and Madison Hutchinson each added one assist to round out the scoring for BSU.

Bemidji State and North Dakota were locked in a defensive battle in the first period as each team limited scoring opportunities for their opponent. Both teams managed to only produce four shots on goal, and UND successfully stopped the Beaver’s lone power-play in the period.

North Dakota was able to score the first goal of the series in the second period when Amy Menke notched a power-play goal with 9:34 remaining. The Beavers would get an opportunity to tie the game in the period after earning another power play with under four minutes to go. However, goaltender Lexie Shaw turned aside three shots by BSU and entered the third period up 1-0.

North Dakota remained strong defensively in the third period and limited the Beavers to just five shots in the period, but BSU would only need one to tie the game. With under two minutes remaining, head coach Jim Scanlan pulled goaltender Brittni Mowat in favor of the extra attacker. Bemidji State increased the offensive pressure and Miller netted the game-tying goal.

For the second game in-a-row, Bemidji State and North Dakota would need an overtime period to decide a winner and seven seconds before the game would be decided by a shootout, Joyce found the back of the net to earn the 2-1 win for the Beavers.

Mowat earned her six win of the season and improved her record to 6-0-1 after only allowing the power-play goal in the second and making 24 saves.

Bemidji State will have another tough Western Collegiate Hockey Association match-up next weekend when they travel to No. 2 University of Wisconsin.
