Hunt's two goals powers Beavers to fourth consecutive win

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Junior Reece Hunt scored both goals including the game-winning overtime goal as the Bemidji State University women's hockey team defeated St. Cloud State University 2-1 in overtime Saturday afternoon. With the win the Beavers earned two points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and took five-of-six points from the Huskies to leapfrog them in the standings.

Bemidji State has now won four consecutive games and improve its season record to 6-8-2 and 3-8-1 in conference play while SCSU falls to 6-9-1 (2-9-1 WCHA).

Sophomore goaltender Hannah Hogenson earned her fourth consecutive victory in net and improves to 5-5-2 this season after she stopped 29-of-30 shots.

Hunt started the scoring in the game in the opening period when she batted home a rebounded Paige Beebe shot just 5:49 into the period. Hogenson and the Beavers' defense held the Huskies scoreless through the period and BSU took a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.

Each team struggled to find the back of the net during a penalty filled second period as 14 penalties were called during the period. Neither team could beat each other's goaltender and the Beavers went into the final frame with the one-goal lead.

St. Cloud State finally bested Hogenson in the third period when Emma Gentry scored her third goal of the series with 11:40 left in the game. The Beavers couldn't break the tie and each team would head to the three-on-three overtime period to decide a victor.

Bemidji State earned two power plays during the extra period and finally capitalized on one when Hunt buried her second goal of the game, fifth of the season, with a snap shot that beat goaltender Sanni Ahola to the far side for her first game-winning goal of the season.

The Beavers totaled 29 shots to 30 for the Huskies and spent 18 minutes with a skater in the box while St. Cloud State had 24 penalty minutes. Bemidji State earned nine power plays and scored its lone power-play goal with Hunt's game winner while St. Cloud State finished the game 1-for-6 on the power play.

Five Beavers recorded a point in the game with Beebe, senior Graysen Myers, freshman Ella Anick and senior Kate Boland all tallying assists.

Bemidji State will put its four-game winning streak to the test next weekend when it returns home to host No. 1 University of Wisconsin, Dec. 10-11.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota's wooden region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, BSU sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men's and women's hockey membership in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
