Beavers earn split at Upper Iowa

FAYETTE, Iowa – The Bemidji State University softball team earned a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series split at Upper Iowa University Sunday afternoon. The Beavers (9-21, 5-11 NSIC) fell in game one against the Peacocks (10-19, 6-10 NSIC) 9-1 in six innings but then snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory in game two.

Senior Stephi Dullum struggle in the circle in game one versus the Peacocks and allowed six runs (four earned) off of five hits in just one inning to earn the loss and fall to 6-5 this season. Bemidji State totaled just one hit in the game while Upper Iowa earned 11 en route to a 9-1 victory in six innings.

Freshman Stella Dolan came in to pitch four innings in relief and allowed three runs off of six hits while junior Elaina Christiansen recorded the lone hit for the Beavers, a double in the fourth inning.

Peacocks Abby McKay earned the complete game, one-hit shutout and improved to 8-7 this season and earned five strikeouts.

Redshirt freshman Kyla Damerow held the Peacocks to one run off of five hits in game two to help the Beavers snap a five-game losing streak.

Damerow earned four strikeouts while only walking two in her second complete game win of the season and improves to 2-8 this season. Damerow then retired nine of the Peacocks' next 13 batters to complete the comeback victory and earn the series split.

Bemidji State ends it 10-game road trip and returns home for a six-game homestand beginning Wednesday, April 21 by hosting University of Minnesota Duluth for a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m.

Upper Iowa scored first in the game in the second inning but Bemidji State responded win the fourth with a solo home run from senior Lexi Derrick and then took the lead three batters later when freshman Maddy McCann hit an RBI single that scored junior Jennifer Smith. Damerow
