SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Fifth-year senior
Sara Wendt scored her first career hat trick to lead the Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team to its fourth consecutive victory in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Sunday afternoon. The Beavers earned a 4-1 victory over University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Wendt becomes the first Beaver women's soccer student-athlete to record a hat trick since Rachel Norton on Oct. 11, 2015.
With the win, the Beavers now move into second place in the NSIC standings with 27 league points and an 8-1-3 conference record. They trail Minnesota State University, Mankato for first in the conference by one point. Bemidji State is now 9-2-4 overall.
Sioux Falls (0-10-5, 0-7-5 NSIC) opened the scoring in the 13
th minute with a goal from Addison Westermeyer. However, Wendt and the Beavers responded in the 14
th minute with her first goal of the game and fifth of the season.
The teams would enter halftime locked in the 1-1 tie but the Beavers broke through in the second half after Wendt scored in the 56
th minute and 62
nd minute to complete the hat trick. BSU then made it 4-1 with a late goal from
Maria Stocke who finished the game with a goal and assist.
Megan Dahl and
Allyson Smith each earned assists as well and Smith is now two assists shy from breaking the program's career assist record.
Bemidji State dominated the game offensively and totaled 31 shots in the game, 16 of which were on goal. Sioux Falls totaled six shots and five on goal.
The Beavers also earned four corner kicks in the game and 0 for the Cougars.
Georgiana Harber made three saves in the game to improve to 3-0-1 on the season.
Bemidji State has just three games remaining on its 2022 regular season and will travel to University of Mary Friday, Oct. 21 to face the Marauders before returning home to host Minot State University Sunday for its final home game of the regular season.
