Borg homers twice as Beaver Baseball drops doubleheader to Hawks

OMAHA, Neb. (Creighton Prep Baseball Field) -- Senior Parker Borg recorded his first home runs of the season Sunday as Bemidji State University baseball fell during both of its final two games against Rockhurst University, 4-1 and 8-7, in Omaha, Neb. Borg homered twice on the day as the Beavers fall to 0-4 overall and the Hawks improve to 4-3 overall.

Game Three – Rockhurst, 4-1

Borg led off scoring at the top of the first inning with a two-out, solo home run. BSU's lead of 1-0 was erased during the bottom of the second inning as RU led off with a double, advanced to third base on a fly out and tied the game on a sacrifice fly.

The Hawks scored the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the third inning, crossing runs on RBI singles with three hits total in the frame. Bemidji State left four runners on base after the third inning, leaving one runner in scoring position in the third. Rockhurst added a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 4-1 lead.

Pitcher Grant Hartmann (0-1) took the loss after throwing the first 5.0 innings with three strikeouts, one walk, five hits and three earned runs allowed. BSU totaled three hits on the day, including two from Borg, while the Hawks recorded six hits and scored the final four runs of the game.

Game Four – Rockhurst, 8-7

Borg recorded his second home run of the day to begin the second game, this time with one runner on to give BSU a 2-0 lead with one out. Kyle Ellis followed two batters later with a solo home run to extend the Beavers lead to 3-0.

Borg also started the game on the mound and finished throwing 2.0 innings with one strikeout, two walks, no hits and no runs allowed. The Beavers extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning as Borg led off with a single to center field. Sam Kalberer followed with a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Ellis came through with his second RBI of the day, a single to left field to score Borg.

After Rockhurst scored its first runs in the bottom of the third inning behind three hits and a sacrifice fly, Bemidji State added one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Kalberer led off the top of the fifth inning with his first home run of the season while Hunter Daymond singled to lead off the sixth and was brought home on an RBI single by Carter Simon for a 6-2 lead.

The Hawks totaled nine hits over the next three innings and crossed the game-winning runs on a two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Beavers put their first two batters on base by a hit by pitch and walk as an error allowed Borg to score and set a runner on third base with one out. The final two BSU batters were sent down by stikeout and ground out.

Borg totaled two RBI on two hits with three runs scored while Ellis chipped in two RBI on two hits and one run scored. Daymond, Kalberer and Simon recorded two hits each. Pitcher Travis Carruth (0-1) took the loss after throwing 2.0 innings with one strikeout, five hits and four earned runs allowed.

Bemidji State returns to the road Feb. 25-27 to take on William Jewell College in a four-game series in Liberty, Mo.
