Box Score 2 LIBERTY, Mo. (Fountain Bluff Sports Complex) -- Bemidji State University fell in both of its series-opening games to William Jewell College Saturday in Liberty, Mo. The Beavers lost game one, 10-3, before a loss in game two, 7-5, to fall to 0-6 overall this season.
Game One – William Jewell, 10-3
The Cardinals opened the series with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI double and RBI single for a 3-0 lead. The Beavers answered to load the bases with one out and crossed a run following a sacrifice fly from junior catcher Derek Dolezal in the top of the second inning.
WJC added another run in the bottom of the third inning before BSU put runners on base again. The first three Beavers reached base with junior infielder Kyle Ellis scoring on an error from a failed pickoff attempt while junior outfielder John Perkins singled to right field to drive in a run and cut the deficit to one, 4-3, in the top of the fourth inning.
The Beaver side was retired in order in the fifth and sixth innings as the Cardinals added six runs between the fourth and sixth innings.
Sophomore pitcher Will Lavin (0-2) took the loss after starting the first 4.2 innings with five strikeouts, one walk, 10 hits and six earned runs allowed. Sophomore infielder Jack Munson and Perkins led BSU with two hits each while Munson added a run and Perkins with an RBI.
Game Two – William Jewell, 7-5
Bemidji State struck first in game two with a three-run first inning, sparked by an RBI single from senior Parker Borg. Sophomore infielder Carter Simon recorded BSU's fourth straight hit of the inning to drive in senior Sam Kalberer. Junior Tom Keohen followed two batters later with an RBI double down the left field line to give BSU a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Senior pitcher Logan Barrick started the game and kept the Cardinals hitless through the first two innings. Simon added to BSU's lead in the fourth inning with a two-out single before stealing second and scoring on a single by Ellis. WJC began to chip away at the 4-0 BSU lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Barrick held on to the BSU lead through the sixth inning, just after freshman Isaiah Beihn scored on an RBI single from Kalberer for a 5-3 lead. The Cardinals put four runners on base with one out, including a two-RBI single to tie the game 5-5, in the eighth inning. WJC drove in its final two runs on a two-out two-RBI single for a 7-5 lead.
Kalberer led BSU with three hits in five at-bats with one RBI and one run scored. Ellis and Simon each recorded two hits and one RBI. Senior pitcher Travis Carruth (0-2) took the loss after throwin 0.2 innings with two hits and one earned run allowed.
Bemidji State and William Jewell close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Sunday in Liberty, Mo.
