Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. (Kino Sports Complex) -- Bemidji State University baseball extended its winning streak to three games before a split on Thursday against Northland College and Wabash College at the Tucson Invitational Games. The Beavers came away with a 12-2 win over the Lumberjacks to extend its winning streak before a 3-2 loss to the Little Giants in Tucson, Ariz.
Game One – Bemidji State, 12-2 F/7
The Lumberjacks struck first against the Beavers with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning before Bemidji State came away with six runs in each of the third and fourth innings. BSU reached its first seven batters on base in the home half of the third inning, crossing five runs before an out was recorded. Senior Parker Borg and sophomore Carter Simon each walked with the bases loaded to drive in the first two runs while an error on a pick-off attempt and a two-RBI single by junior Kyle Ellis pushed BSU's lead to 5-1. Sophomore Gabe Davis brought in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, driving in Ellis for a 6-1 lead.
Bemidji State sent the Northland side down in order in the top of the fourth inning before another six-run bottom half. Following a lead-off out, BSU recorded five straight hits, including a two-RBI double by Simon, to extend its lead to 10-1. A walk and fielding error brought in Ellis while a sacrifice fly from freshman Isaiah Biehn gave BSU a 12-1 lead.
Borg started the game and threw 2.1 innings with five strikeouts, four walks, two hits and one earned run allowed. Junior Alex Fietek (1-0) earned the win after throwing 3.2 innings with two strikeouts, two walks, no hits and no runs allowed. Ellis and Simon each finished with three RBIs while Ellis and juniors Michael O'Malley and James Wirt each recorded two hits. Five Beavers finished with two runs scored.
Game Two – Wabash, 3-2
Bemidji State crossed the first runs of game two against Wabash on an RBI single from Borg to bring freshman Hunter Daymond home with two outs. The Beavers came back in the bottom of the fourth with another two-out run as junior Derek Dolezal drove in sophomore Jack Munson on an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
Junior pitcher Jackson Back threw 6.0 innings with one unearned run allowed and four strikeouts, exiting the game with a 2-1 lead. Wabash came away with two runs on two hits and one error in the top of the seventh inning for the final 3-2 lead of the game.
BSU reached just one batter on base through the final three innings, a leadoff walk by Borg in the top of the eighth. Borg and Munson each recorded two hits while Borg and Dolezal each drive in one RBI. Junior pitcher Jake Matise (0-1) took the loss while freshman Isaiah Biehn threw the final 2.0 innings with one strikeout, one hit, no walks and no runs allowed.
Bemidji State concludes its spring trip at the Tucson Invitational Games at 10 a.m. Friday against Southwest Minnesota State University in a non-conference game.
