Barrick throws complete game as CSP sweeps BSU weekend opener

MINNETONKA, Minn. (Veterans Field) -- Bemidji State University baseball senior pitcher Logan Barrick threw a complete game to open a doubleheader sweep to Concordia University-St. Paul on Saturday afternoon at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. BSU fell in a pitcher's duel, 2-0, before a 7-2 loss to CSP to fall to 3-13 overall and 0-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Game One – CSP, 2-0
Both teams combined to reach only five base runners through the first five innings as BSU starting pitcher Logan Barrick (1-2) threw a complete game. The senior struck out seven batters to tie a career high and allowed two hits, two walks and two earned runs.

Bemidji State reached only three base runners through the first game of the series, led off by junior Tom Keohen with the team's first hit in the top of the second inning. CSP scored the game-winning run in the bottom half of the second inning as a one-out single and stolen base led to an RBI single. The Golden Bears' added its final run following another one-out single, one stolen base and two wild pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Senior Parker Borg and sophomore Jack Munson led off the Beavers' half of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles. A strikeout, thrown out stealing double play preceded the game's final out.

Borg, Keohen and Munson accounted for each of BSU's three hits and only base runners.

Game Two – CSP, 7-2
Bemidji State put a runner on base in each of the first three innings while one reached scoring position and was stranded. Concordia-St. Paul scored one run in each of the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Beavers tied the game with one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Junior James Wirt led off the fifth frame with a single, was moved to second on a bunt and third on a balk, and scored BSU's first run on a wild pitch. BSU recorded three straight singles to start the sixth inning to set up a sacrifice fly by sophomore Carter Simon to drive in junior John Perkins and tie the game, 2-2. BSU followed with a pop up before a ground out with two runners in scoring position to end the threat.

Following a lead-off walk for CSP in the bottom of the sixth, the Golden Bears recorded three straight hits, including a two-RBI double to take the lead, 4-2. Concordia-St. Paul extended its lead again in the sixth inning before adding one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings.

Wirt went 2-of-3 from the plate with one run and one walk while Borg went 2-of-4 with a double. Sophomore Will Lavin (0-5) took the loss after throwing 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and four earned runs allowed.

Bemidji State and Concordia-St. Paul close out the three-game series at 12 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Field.
