Golden Bears come away with 2-1 win over Bemidji State at Veterans Field

Box Score

MINNETONKA, Minn. (Veterans Field) -- Bemidji State University and Concordia University-St. Paul battled in another low-scoring duel Sunday to close out a three-game series, edged out by the Golden Bears 2-1 at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. The Beavers featured five pitchers who allowed just two runs and five hits combined as the team falls to 3-14 overall and 0-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Sophomore pitcher Grant Hartmann started the game and retired four straight batters before leaving the game due to injury with one out in the second inning. Sophomore pitcher Jacob Mathiason (0-2) entered to pitch and exited the second inning on a double play to preserve a 0-0 tie.

Sophomore Gabriel Davis led off the third inning with the game's first hit and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was stranded following a fly out and ground out. CSP scored the game's first run in the home half of the third inning as its first three batters reached base. The third base runner reached on an RBI single down the left field line, setting up runners on first and second with no outs. A fielder's choice retired the runner at second base before freshman Isaiah Biehn entered the pitch and retired the next two batters to hold the bases loaded and to trail, 1-0.

Sophomore Carter Simon singled with two outs in the top of the fourth inning but was caught stealing to end the top half. CSP's final run of the game was set up by a lead-off single, a stolen base and sacrifice fly to right field.

Two of BSU's first three batters in the following inning reached base on walks, as the first runner moved to third on a wild pitch. Junior Derek Dolezal brought in junior James Wirt on a sacrifice fly to cut CSP's lead to one, 2-1, with two outs. A swinging strikeout left a BSU runner stranded at first to end the top of the fifth inning.

Biehn threw 4.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits and one walk with a career-high three strikeouts. Junior pitchers Jake Matise and Christian Turner finished the final 1.1 innings for BSU with just one hit and one base runner allowed.

Bemidji State left nine base runners stranded through the game compared to six for Concordia-St. Paul. The Beavers hit 1-of-12 with runners on base and 0-of-10 with runners in scoring position while the Golden Bears went just 2-of-11 from the plate with runners on base.

BSU travels to Mankato, Minn., on Wednesday, March 23 to take on Minnesota State University, Mankato.
