BSU drops doubleheader to (RV) Minnesota State late Thursday night

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Ronken Field) -- Bemidji State University fell in both games of a doubleheader Thursday against (RV) Minnesota State University, Mankato at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Mavericks took game one 12-1 and game two 10-0 as the Beavers fall to 3-16 overall and 0-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Game One – MSU, 12-1
Senior pitcher Parker Borg (0-1) retired the first three Mavericks batters to open the game, including the first of his three strikeouts to head to the second inning. Sophomore Carter Simon recorded the game's first hit in the second inning before being stranded. MSU loaded the bases in the bottom half of the second inning on two walks and a hit by pitch with one out. The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead after two wild pitches while a fielder's choice preserved the score heading into the third inning.

Minnesota State added one run on a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning before Bemidji State scored its first run in the fifth. Juniors Gabriel Davis and Derek Dolezal, and sophomore Wyatt Hamann each recorded singles with two outs as Hamann's hit drove in Davis to cut the MSU lead to two, 3-1.

The Mavericks pulled away after the bottom of the fifth inning with six runs on five hits and two Beaver errors. MSU held a 9-1 lead before adding three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Borg went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts while sophomore pitcher Grant Hartmann threw the final 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. Hamann went 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI while Davis went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Game Two – MSU, 10-0
Borg opened game two with a single in the first inning, one of BSU's two total hits in the game. He was stranded at first as Minnesota State scored at least three runs in each of the first three innings. MSU used 13 hits and one BSU error to grab a 10-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth inning.

Junior Jackson Back (0-1) started on the mound and took the loss after throwing 3.0 innings. Junior pitcher Alex Fietek threw 2.0 innings with one strikeout and allowed no hits and one walk. Borg and sophomore Jack Munson accounted for BSU's two hits, the only two base runners for the Beavers in the game.

Bemidji State will remain in Sioux Falls ahead of its three-game series at Ronken Field against (RV) Augustana University March 26-27. The Beavers and Vikings will play a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. Saturday ahead of the series finale at 12 p.m. Sunday.
