Box Score 2 WINONA, Minn. (Loughrey Field) -- Winona State University erased two final-inning leads while handing Bemidji State University baseball losses of 9-4 in eight innings and 6-2 in 10 innings Wednesday in Winona, Minn. The Beavers held one-run leads heading into the top of the seventh inning of both games before falling to 5-27 overall and 2-16 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Game One – WSU, 9-4
Freshman pitcher Isaiah Biehn made the start in game one and retired nine of 11 batters faced through the first three innings. The Warriors struck first in the top of the fourth inning behind four hits, including a two-RBI double and an RBI single, to take a 3-0 lead.
Senior Sam Kalberer and sophomore Jack Munson led off the bottom of the fourth inning by reaching base and eventually scoring on a two-RBI single up the middle by sophomore Zach Listiak. Trailing 3-2, junior John Perkins came up with a two-RBI single to center field to drive in Listiak and junior Derek Dolezal to take a 4-3 lead.
Biehn retired the next six batters faced to head into the seventh inning with the lead. A one-out walk was followed by an RBI double to tie the game heading into the bottom of the inning. Perkins led off with his second hit of the day and was moved to second base on a bunt but was one of two BSU runners left stranded to head to extra innings.
WSU put three of its first four batters on base, including an intentional walk, before an error led to the go-ahead run. With the bases loaded, the Warriors hit a grand slam to pull ahead, 9-4.
Biehn finished throwing 6.1 innings with two strikeouts, one walk and four runs allowed. Senior pitcher Travis Carruth (0-4) took the loss after throwing 1.0 innings with two strikeouts and two runs allowed, both unearned. Perkins and Dolezal led BSU with two hits each.
Game Two – WSU, 6-2
The Warriors struck first again in game two with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third inning before the Beavers tied the game in the bottom half. Junior James Wirt singled to center field for BSU's first hit of the game and was eventually brought home following a single by Perkins, a WSU error and a wild pitch to tie the game. Kalberer and Munson led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single and a walk, respectively, to set up a ground out RBI by senior Tom Keohen to take a 2-1 lead.
With one out in the top of the seventh inning, WSU recorded back-to-back singles ahead of a two-out RBI single to tie the game and force a bottom half of the inning. BSU's batters in the bottom of the seventh inning were all sent down by strikeouts to force extra innings.
Both teams put just one baserunner on through the next two innings before WSU pulled ahead with three hits and four runs in the top of the 10th inning. Following a strikeout and foul out to start the top half, the Warriors put two runners on by walks before scoring on an RBI single. WSU extended its 3-2 lead behind an RBI double and a two-RBI single.
BSU totaled just three hits through game two, coming from Kalberer, Wirt and Perkins. Freshman Jacob Marx threw 4.0 innings with one strikeout, one walk and no runs allowed while freshman Derek Hoffman (0-1) took the loss.
Bemidji State is scheduled to travel to Crookston, Minn., Friday and Saturday to take on the University of Minnesota Crookston.
