Beaver Baseball faulters late in 7-1, series-finale loss to Wildcats

WAYNE, Neb. -- Late runs cost Bemidji State University baseball a 7-1 loss to Wayne State College on Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Neb. Senior Sam Kalberer led BSU hitting 3-of-5 from the plate as the Beavers fall to 4-21 overall and 1-10 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Sophomore Will Lavin (0-7) began Sunday's series finale by retiring six of the first seven Wayne State batters faced. Sophomore Jack Munson led off the bottom of the second inning with the first of his two doubles on the day and advanced to third with one out. A strikeout and ground out ended BSU's threat with two runners stranded.

WSC followed in the third inning to hit a two-run home run for the first lead of the game, 2-0. BSU left another runner on base in the bottom half of the third before WSC added another run on a solo home run to start the fourth inning. The Beavers recorded two one-out singles in each of the fourth and fifth innings before scoring their first run in the sixth.

Senior Tom Keohen led off the sixth inning with a single followed by a walk from sophomore Carter Simon. Junior Gabriel Davis followed two at-bats later with a single down the left field line to cut the deficit to two, 3-1. The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning on one hit, three walks and two hit by pitches for a 6-1 lead. WSC scored its final run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning.

Lavin threw 6.0 innings with six strikeouts, three walks and four hits allowed. Junior pitcher Jake Matise threw the final 1.1 innings with one strikeout, no walks and one hit allowed.

Kalberer's three hits were all singles while Keohen and Munson each went 2-for-4 from the plate. Bemidji State left 11 baserunners stranded and went 1-of-12 from the plate with runners in scoring position.

Bemidji State travels to Fayette, Iowa Tuesday, April 5 in a site-reversed doubleheader against Upper Iowa University. The Beavers and Peacocks throw first pitch at 12 p.m. from Robertson Woods Field.
