Beavers welcome Golden Bears and No. 11 Mavericks this weekend

Bemidji State sees ranked opponent for second time this season

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team welcomes Concordia University-St. Paul and No. 11 Minnesota State University, Mankato this weekend in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers (4-10, 1-9 NSIC) see the court first against the Golden Bears (7-7, 4-6 NSIC) on Friday at 5:30 p.m., in the BSU Gymnasium. The following day BSU hosts No. 11 Minnesota State (12-2, 8-2 NSIC) at 3:30 p.m.
 
The Series vs Concordia-St. Paul
  • Concordia-St. Paul leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 33-15.
  • The Beavers and Golden Bears last met Feb. 27, 2022, with an 85-58 win by CSP in Sioux Falls, S.D., in the NSIC Tournament.
  • Concordia-St. Paul leads the series when played in Bemidji, 16-8. 
  • Bemidji State and Concordia-St. Paul first met Jan. 4, 1978, a 77-64 win for BSU.
 
The Series vs Minnesota State Mankato
  • Minnesota State leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 32-14.
  • The Beavers and Mavericks last met Jan. 14, 2022, with a 72-68 win by MSU in Mankato, Minn.
  • Minnesota State leads the series when played in Bemidji, 18-11. 
  • Bemidji State and Minnesota State Mankato first met Jan. 3, 1976, 48-41 win for BSU.
 
Fast Break Bemidji State
  • The Beavers come into the week looking to return to the win column after falling to Upper Iowa University, 69-82 and Winona State University 63-76.
  • Bemidji State sees action against a ranked opponent for the second team this season in No. 11 Minnesota State. BSU in its first ranked game of the season fell 50-68 to No. 13 Western Washington University in the Lynda Goodrich Classic on Nov. 26. The last time the Beavers defeated a ranked opponent was Jan. 8, 2011 when BSU beat No. 21 Augustana University 79-78.
  • Sam Pogatchnik scored 18 points in both games last weekend after shooting 13-for-22 (59.1%) from the field, 5-for-12 (41.7%) from deep and 5-for-6 (83.3%) from the free throw line.
  • Trinity Yoder was held to a season low of six points against Winona State but set up nine baskets for her second highest assist night of the season. Yoder finished with 12 assists on the weekend bringing her season total to 60, leading the team and second in the conference.
  • Pogatchnik grabbed 13 rebounds in the two games to extend her season total to 96, first for BSU and ninth in the NSIC.
  • In the loss to Upper Iowa, the Beavers scored 69 points their third highest scoring night of the season. BSU shot 27-for-68 (39.7%) from the field, 3-for-17 (17.6%) from three and 12-for-16 (75.0%) from the charity stripe.
  • At Winona State the Beavers made eight three-point shots one shy from their season high. Isabel Majewski and Pogatchnik converted on three of their shots and Erin Barrette was responsible for the other two.
  • Bemidji State averages 60.0 points per game but allow 69.5 ppg. Yoder leads the Beavers with 199 points, 14.2 ppg, tied for 12th in the NSIC.
  • The Beavers recorded their 500th rebound of the season on the last board against Winona State. BSU averages 35.7 rebounds per game, 10th in the conference.
  • Bemidji State is 14th in the NSIC in scoring offense and 13th in scoring defense.
  • BSU is 15th in field goal percentage (.381) and 14th in 3-point field goal percentage (.284). 
  • Bemidji State is eighth in blocked shots with 3.36 per game, Alyssa Hill leads the Beavers with nine.
  • The Beavers climbed two positions up to 11th in turnovers averaging 16.6 per game and 13th in assist to turnover ratio.
 
Scouting Concordia-St. Paul
  • Head Coach Amanda Johnson starts her eighth season with the Golden Bears (114-80).
  • Concordia-St. Paul is currently on a three-game losing streak after dropping its games last weekend. CSP started the New Year with No. 23 University of Minnesota, Duluth and fell 34-62, followed by a 49-69 defeat to St. Cloud State University.
  • CSP averages 60.8 points per game shooting 37.0% from the field and 27.4% from behind the arc.
  • Junior guard Ally Gietzel leads the Golden Bears in points and rebounds with 162 points and 91 boards. Gietzel's best game came against Minnesota State where she recorded her second double-double of the season with a season high of 19 points and 11 rebounds, along with four blocks and three assists.
 
Scouting Minnesota State Mankato
  • Head Coach Emilee Thiesse starts her 11th season with the Mavericks (182-108).
  • MSU dropped its second game of the season last week falling to No. 23 Minnesota Duluth 75-78 after defeating St. Cloud State 86-61 the previous day.
  • Minnesota State averages 85.1 points per game shooting 43.7% from the field and 31.2% from behind the arc. MSU lead Division II in steals with 16.8 per game and are fifth in points per game.
  • Junior forward Joey Batt was NSIC South Division Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 12 after recording 35 points and 10 assists the week before. Batt's best game came against Southwest Minnesota State University on Dec. 17 with 32 points.
