BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University Men's Hockey sophomore
Mattias Sholl recorded his first collegiate shutout Friday night at Sanford Center as the Beavers (10-8-5, 8-4-3 CCHA) skated past Northern Michigan University in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series opener.
Â
Sholl stopped all 18 shots by the Wildcats (11-12-0, 7-8-0 CCHA) to collect his first shutout and was aided by a Beaver offense that scored three goals just 54 seconds apart in the first period for the fastest three goals in program history since a program record 45 seconds on Feb. 24, 2006. The three goals in 54 seconds are the third fastest in program history when the Beavers also scored three goals 53 seconds apart on March 6, 2004.
Â
Fifth-year senior transfer
Kaden Pickering started the flurry of Beaver goals at 6:15 of the first period when he converted on a two-on-one to score his third goal of the season.
Â
He was followed by junior
Eric Martin just 28 seconds later after he scored his fourth goal of the season with a nifty move while on the breakaway.
Â
Fifth-year senior transfer
Mitchell Martan then capped off the flurry of Beaver goals after batting home a loose puck in front of Wildcats goaltender Beni Halasz to score his eighth of the season..
Â
Following the third goal, Halasz was replaced in goal by Charlie Glockner after he allowed three goals on 10 shots in the first 7:09 of play.
Â
The Wildcats slowed the Beavers' scoring spree after the third goal but freshman
Lleyton Roed added to the Beavers lead in the second period when he scored his fourth of the season with 3:46 to play in the middle frame.
Â
The four goals would prove enough as Sholl was perfect in net stopping all 18 shots by the Wildcats including seven in the final 20 minutes. Sholl praised his team in front of him in postgame interviews saying they did an excellent job of getting in lanes and blocking shots to hold Northern Michigan to just 18 shots on goal.
Â
The shutout victory is the first of the season for the Beavers and first since March 7, 2021.
Â
The Beavers also saw success on the penalty kill denying the Wildcats on all three of their chances including a critical 5-on-3 power play halfway through the third period.
Â
Bemidji State out-shot Northern Michigan 35-18 in the game.
Â
Sholl improves to 8-5-5 on the season while Halasz was credited with the loss and falls to 9-11-0 while Glockner came in to stop 24-of-25 shots in his relief appearance.
Â
The Beavers will attempt for their first series sweep of the season tomorrow night when the two teams meet again at Sanford Center. Puck drop is schedule for 6:07 p.m. The Beavers will be hosting Skate With The Beavers following the game and members of the community are welcome to skate with members of the men's and women's hockey teams as well as receive a free autograph poster.
