BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team will play one more time in 2023 as they will close the calendar year facing Valley City State this Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. inside the BSU Gym.
Bemidji State (2-7) is coming off a couple of close losses last week at home to UMary (72-59) and at St. Cloud State (60-52). Alyssa Hill led the way scoring 16 points in both games. Amme Sheforgen added 20 points, 16 rebounds and five assists over the two games.
The Beavers are averaging 59.8 points and allowing 65.3. BSU is making 201-518 (38.8) from the field, 47-172 (27.3) from three and 89-141 (63.1) at the foul line. Opponents are making 222-534 (41.6) from the field, 34-142 (23.9) from three and 110-169 (65.1) at the foul line.
Hill averages 15.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, while making over 51 percent (56-109) from the field. Sam Pogatchnik is second on the team averaging 8.2 points, while tallying 21 assists and averaging four rebounds per contest. Sydney White tallied 6.8 points per game, with Sheforgen adding six points per game and a team-best 5.4 rebounds. Alayna Suprenand leads the team with 28 assists, while adding 5.6 points per game.
Valley City State is 6-6 overall on the season and will play at UMary in Bismarck on Monday night before facing the Beavers on Tuesday.
The Vikings last played on Dec. 5 falling at Minot State (72-58). They have played other similar opponents falling at St. Cloud State (77-43) and played Minnesota Morris twice winning the first meeting at home (77-62) and then dropping the rematch on the road (65-53).
Valley City State averages 63.9 points and allows 72. VCS has made 252-693 (36.4) from the field, 85-269 (31.6) from three and 114-171 (66.7) at the foul line. Opponents have made 288-674 (42.7) from the field, 67-204 (32.8) from three and 149-223 (66.8) at the foul line.
Ashlyn Diemert leads the way averaging 10.8 points and has made 17 three-pointers. Adriana Torres adds 10.1 points and 5.7 rebounds. Hailey Roberts is at 9.5 points.
This will be the eighth meeting between the teams since 2015 with the Beavers holding the 5-2 series advantage. BSU has won the last three meetings and are 4-1 at home. The teams played last November with Bemidji State claiming the 60-43 victory in Bemidji. The last three games have all been played in Bemidji with the Beavers winning all three by an average of 22 points.

Following this home game, Bemidji State will be off until Jan. 5, 2024, when they will travel to Marshall, Minn., to face Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play starting at 7:30 p.m.
