Bemidji State falls to Mary and Minnesota Duluth on day two of tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Softball team dropped the final two games of the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament on Sunday. In the first game, the University of Mary rallied to win in the late innings by a score of 10-8. Then in the nightcap, the Beavers faced the University of Minnesota Duluth for a second time with the Bulldogs claiming the rematch 13-2 in five innings in St. Cloud, Minn. The Beavers went 1-3 to start off the season in the tournament with their victory coming against host St. Cloud State University.

In the first game, The Beavers jumped on top in the second inning with three runs against the Marauders (2-5). Emmarie Yeager started the scoring with a bunt to send Mariah Stevenson home. Morgan Benedict added two more runs with a triple. In the fifth inning with the bases loaded, Ashley Herold doubled to clear the bases for three more runs. BSU was not done yet with Molly Horuts singling and Kora Martin drawing a walk with the bases loaded for the RBI to lead 8-0 after five innings.

The Beavers offense stifled after the fifth inning, while the Marauders came alive starting with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mary followed that up with six more runs in the sixth to pull ahead by two runs. BSU threatened in their last at-bat getting two runners on, but a lineout and groundout ended the game with the Marauders taking the 10-8 victory. Kyla Damerow started the game for Bemidji State striking out three batters and only walking one. Stella Dolan (1-2) came in in the fifth inning to try to get out of the jam and ended up with the loss, before Damerow got the last out in the sixth. Damerow ended up pitching 5.1 innings, with Dolan going the other two-thirds of an inning.

Offensively, eight players tallied a hit for the Beavers with Elaina Christiansen, Stevenson and Yeager all posting two hits apiece. Herold drove in three runs, with Benedict adding two. Each team tallied 11 hits.

After being shut out the day before against the Bulldogs (7-0), the Beavers scored a run in the first inning when Elaina Christiansen singled sending Martin home who doubled earlier in the frame. In the top of second, Yeager hit her first extra base hit of the season roping a double to right-center to plate Herold who walked to start the inning. Holding the 2-1 lead, UMD came right back with five runs in the second inning on their way to claiming the 13-2 victory in five innings.

Dolan started in the circle and went all four innings for the Beavers. She tallied two strikeouts and threw 94 pitches. Four Beavers had a hit in the contest in Martin, Elaina Christiansen, Herold and Yeager. The Bulldogs held a 13-4 edge in hits.

The Beavers hit their second early season tournament next week when they will compete in the Bubble Invite 2 hosted by Minot State University at the Air-Supported Dome in Minot, N.D. Bemidji State starts the tournament with the hosts Minot State on Friday starting at 5 p.m. BSU will play Providence and Carroll College, both out of Montana, on Saturday, before closing the tournament on Sunday against Montana State Billings.
