BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – The Bemidji State University Men's Golf team, after finishing tied for sixth through day one, shot 300 on day two to finish alone in third place at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preview in Blue Springs, Mo., on Tuesday. The Beavers were the highest finishing team from the NSIC and placed ahead of both Missouri Western and Winona State, who were listed in the recent NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings. Rylin Petry and Jack Southard finished with the second-best score of the day at 72 to improve 20 places finishing tied for fifth.
Bemidji State entered day two tied with University of Minnesota State, Crookston and Fort Hays State University at 301. The Beavers were one of a few teams that had a better day two than day one ending the contest at 601 (+25), alone in third place. University of Central Missouri remained in first after day one finishing at 580 (+4) with Rogers State University right behind at 584 (+8).
Daniel Robles Delval from Rogers State finished in first shooting 138 (-6), having the best score both days of the tournament. Central Missouri occupied the next three places with Calvin Dillion in second (143) and Alex Gentry and Brooks Baldwin tying for third (145).
Petry and Southard recorded the second-best score of day two at 72 (E) with only Delval finishing above them with a score of 71 (-1). After the first day, Petry and Southard were tied at 25th shooting two-over par (74) and remained tied after finishing even on day two ending up tied for fifth with a pair of 146's. Petry finished the tournament with 30 pars which was the most out of the 128 golfers, Southard finished second with 26. Petry and Southard also tied for the highest finish of golfers from the NSIC, with a golfer each from Winona State and Sioux Falls that tied for fifth. Ben Corbid ended day one seven-over par (79) but bounced back for day two with a four-over (76) to finish third on the team and tied for 51st with a score of 155 (+11). TJ Raden and Koby Kuenzel rounded out the third-place team with scores of 157 (77-80) and 158 (76-82), respectively. Petry, Southard, Corbid and Kuenzel all birdied on their final hole to help lift BSU over Concordia University-St. Paul, Winona State University and Fort Hays State University who all finished three-shots back of BSU (604).
In the second team for Bemidji State, the Beavers climbed a few spots tying for 15th after rounds of 318-311 (629). It was a pair of strong rounds for Caden Lick who landed in a tie for 15th after finishing with the second-best score of day two at 72, trimming four-strokes off his opening round of 76 for a 148. The final round 72 is the freshman's best score and finish in a tournament this season. Lick also tied the winner Delval with the most birdies in the two-day contest with nine. Logan Schoepp improved nine-strokes from day one to finish one-over par (73) in day two for a final score of 155 (+11) and tied for 51st. Tate Usher finished third in the group with 162 (77-85) (+18). Alex Iverson finished with one-less stroke in round two than round one to finish with a 165 (83-82) (+21) and Gus Vatnsdal rounded out the team at 167 (83-84) (+23).
The Beavers continue to play in Missouri next week as they will take part in The Mule at the Mules National Golf Club in Warrensburg, Mo., hosted by Central Missouri.
