GOODYEAR, Ariz. – It was a great start to the spring season for the Bemidji State University Men's Golf team as the Beavers fired a 292 to land in third following the opening round of the Maverick Spring Invite at the Palm Valley Golf Club on Monday. Ben Corbid carried the momentum from a strong fall right into March as he opened with a 69 to sit just one-stroke back of the lead and is tied for third.
Bemidji State came away with a 4-over, 292 and are just six-strokes back of Concordia-St. Paul for the top spot holding a 286. Missouri Western State is in second with a 287. There are a total of nine teams in Goodyear for the invite, as Concordia-St. Paul has two teams in the field.
Corbid, after opening with a bogey, quickly found his stride as he posted five birdies on the front nine. Over the back nine, he added another birdie to finish with six on the day and card a 3-under 69. It's a crowded top of the leaderboard with Concordia-St. Paul's Thomas Huettl and Missouri Western State's Marius Dosiere tied for first with a pair of 68's. Missouri Western State's Jeffrey Johnston is tied with Corbid with a 69, as four players are all under par.
Rylin Petry is in the top-10 tied for sixth after his opening round 73, shooting just 1-over par. After starting out on the front nine shooting mostly par around a pair of bogeys, Petry finished strong sinking two birdies to offset one bogey over the final nine to card his 73.
Jack Southard is a shot back of Petry as he finished the first day with a 74 to tie for 13th. Southard rallied from a tough start on the opening hole to shoot even on the back nine that was aided with two birdies for his 74.
Logan Schoepp is tied for 23rd with his 76. He posted par on 14 holes and found his stride on the back nine as well going just one over to finish with his 76.
Caden Lick rounded out the five for the Beavers as he carded an 80 to tie for 41st. Lick came out of the gate strong with two birdies over the first three holes to go even through the front nine. He also added two more birdies on the back nine but shot 8-over par during that stretch to finish with an 80.
Bemidji State also had three enter the field as individuals. TJ Raden posted a strong opening round as he is just one over with a 73 to tie for sixth along with Petry. Raden posted a birdie around two bogeys through the first nine holes to be 1-over enter the back nine. After two bogeys, he sunk an eagle on the 14th hole to finish even on the back nine and post his 73.
Koby Kuenzel completed an opening round 75 and is tied for 18th. Kuenzel came back strong from a four over par on the front nine, as he shot 1-under over the back nine to post a 75. He added a pair of birdies on holes 11 and 15.
Tate Usher was the final individual entry for the Beavers as he is tied for 29th with a 78. Usher had two birdies on the day and was stronger on the front nine where he went two over par.
The second and final round of the Maverick Spring Invite will take place Tuesday morning starting at 11:06 a.m. (CST). Live results will once again be available here.
