Stocke’s late equalizer earns draw for No. 9 Beavers at Missouri Western State

Junior Maria Stocke scores penalty kick goal in the 83rd minute to salvage 1-1 draw with Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Junior Maria Stocke scored off a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to salvage a 1-1 draw for the No. 9 Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team Friday night at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo.

Trailing 1-0 since the 17th minute, the No. 9 Beavers (0-0-1) finally broke through the Griffons' defense when Stocke was fouled inside the penalty area in the 83rd minute and awarded the first penalty kick of the fresh season for BSU. Having gone 0-for-1 on penalties in two seasons, the Andover, Minn., native had ice in her veins and beat All-MIAA Honorable Mention goalkeeper Keeley Kroonenberg to score the equalizing goal.

MWSU got off to a quick start against the Beavers scoring on its third shot of the match and first on target when hometown native Corrine Stewart scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career just 16:27 into the first half. She nearly doubled the score just three minutes later but her third shot of the game caught the cross bar to keep the Beavers within one and escape the early two-goal deficit.

On a hot Missouri night, the Beavers found their legs later on and registered their first shot of the night that was turned aside by Kroonenberg in the 27th minute. BSU then out-shot the Griffons 4-0 with two on target to end the first half earning momentum heading into halftime.

However, the Griffons bounced back and out-shot the Beavers 4-0 in the first 10 minutes of the second half but junior goalkeeper Edie Frantzen, in her first start since Sept. 24 of her freshman year, denied the lone shot on target to keep the Beavers within one.

The Beavers didn't waiver and their efforts finally paid off with Stocke's penalty kick earning the 1-1 draw in their season-opening match.

Both teams had equal opportunities on goal during the match with the two teams totaling 12 shots but the Beavers bested the Griffons producing four shots on goal to three for MWSU. BSU failed to earn a single corner kick in the game while the Griffons totaled four.

Frantzen made two saves in the game and earns the draw in her 2023 debut while sophomore Sylve Waters came off the bench and led the team with five shots while senior Lauren Hodny paced the team with two shots on goal.

Bemidji State will remain in St. Joseph to take on Rockhurst University for another non-conference match up at Spratt Memorial Stadium. The Beavers will battle the Hawks Sunday morning after their match was moved up to 10:00 a.m. in an effort to beat the Missouri heat.
