CROOKSTON, Minn. – The (RV) Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team exploded for seven goals Friday afternoon as it cruised to a 7-1 victory at University of Minnesota Crookston to open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. It was the highest scoring game for the Beavers since BSU defeated University of Sioux Falls 7-1 Oct. 11, 2015.
Â
The win is the third in-a-row for the Beavers as they improve to 3-0-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play.
Â
Bemidji State wasted little time finding the back of the net when sophomore
Katrina Barthelt netted her third goal of the season in the fifth minute. Just 1:42 later, she found the back of the net again after heading in a wonderful cross from senior
Anna Breffle to put BSU up 2-0 before the 10 minute mark.
Â
The Golden Eagles found life however, when Brooklyn Fischbach beat junior goalkeeper
Edie Frantzen in the 27
th minute to pull UMC within one. The goal snapped a 370:15 shutout streak for the goalkeeper, the longest of her career.
Â
Bemidji State entered halftime with the one-goal lead but just two minutes into the second half, junior
Maria Stocke scored her second of the season after an assist from Barthelt to retake the two-goal lead. The flood gates opened for the Beavers soon after as fifth-year senior
Halle Peterson netted back-to-back goals in the 55
th and 63
rd minutes to make it 5-1 followed by junior
Miah Olson's first goal of the season in the 77
th minute and capped off by freshman
Ella Wades' first collegiate marker in the 87
th minute for the 7-1 victory.
Â
Barthelt and Peterson each recorded their first two goal matches of their careers while Peterson became the first BSU defender to record two goals in a match since All-American Miranda Famestad in 2016. Barthelt paced the Beavers with a career-high five-point match after adding an assist while the Beavers totaled the most points in a single game (19) since Oct. 8 2017 (20).
Â
Bemidji State complete out-paced Minnesota Crookston in the match totaling 30 shots, 19 on goal, compared to 10, five on goal, for the Golden Eagles. Frantzen finished the game making four saves, one shy of tying a career high, while UMC goalkeeper Abby Olsen made 12 saves.
Â
The Beavers will now return home and prepare to host St. Cloud State University at Chet Anderson Stadium Sunday, Sept. 17. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m., with BSU hosting its Cheryl Smyth Memorial Cancer Awareness match.
