After delay No. 23 Beavers keep unbeaten streak alive with 1-1 tie at SMSU

Bathelt scores in the 86th minute to salvage 1-1 tie with Mustangs

MARSHALL, Minn. – After a lengthy lightning delay that postponed Friday night's match between the No. 23 Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team and Southwest Minnesota State University to early Sunday morning, the Beavers earned a 1-1 tie with the Mustangs to keep their eight-match unbeaten streak intact.

Inclement weather postponed the Beavers (5-0-3, 3-0-1 NSIC) and Mustangs (1-5-1, 1-2-1 NSIC) match two and a half hours Friday night where the two teams played a scoreless 49 minutes before more lightning postponed the remainder of the match until early Saturday morning.

SMSU came out of the delay Saturday morning firing and just under two minutes after the match was resumed, Haley Mason put the Mustangs on top with her first goal of the season in the 50th minute.

Desperate to find the tying goal, the Beavers produced chance after chance but fell short of the tying mark until the 86th minute when BSU earned a corner kick. Fifth-year senior Maggie Cade took the kick and sent the ball to the back post where sophomore Katrina Barthelt headed a shot that was blocked by a Mustang defender. However, she collected her own rebound and once again headed the ball but this time into the back of the net for the equalizing goal and her conference leading sixth tally of the season.

It was the second consecutive match that Barthelt scored in the 86th minute and has scored in the last four matches.

Neither team was able to score the game-winning goal in the final four minutes and BSU earned its third tie of the season.

Bemidji State finished the game with nine shots, three on goal while the Mustangs totaled 10 shots and five on goal. The Beavers finished the match with four corner kicks while SMSU earned seven.

BSU will have a quick turn around for its next match and will now travel east to Winona, Minn., to take on the Winona State University Warriors tomorrow at 1 p.m.
