ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Bemidji State University Men's Hockey graduate
Carter Randklev scored twice but the (RV) Beavers fell just short of a comeback at No. 15/16 St. Cloud State University Friday night in St. Cloud, Minn. The Beavers scored twice in the second period to tie the game but Husky freshman Thor Byfuglien scored the game-winning goal in the third period to claim a 4-3 victory for the Huskies.
Â
It was the fourth career mutli-goal performance for Randklev who had three previously at Niagara University. He has now scored in back-to-back games and has three goals in the first two games. Fifth-year senior
Eric Martin also scored for the Beavers for his first goal of the season while fifth-year senior
Austin Jouppi earned two assists in the game.
Â
The Beavers dominated possession of the puck and out-shot the Huskies 33-23 in the game for the first time in four games.
Â
St. Cloud State began the scoring with just 0.6 seconds left in the first period when Austin Burnevik scored as time was expiring in the opening frame.
Â
Randklev answered in the second period with his first of the game just 2:03 after the first intermission. Jouppi earned his first assist on the play with a crafty pass.
Â
Â
The Huskies offense then took over scoring twice halfway through the period off the sticks of Austin Burnevik and Ethan AuCoin.
Â
Randklev once again stopped the Huskies scoring run with his third goal of the season with 4:37 to play in the frame.
Â
Â
Just 34 seconds later Martin got on the scoresheet with his first goal of the season with a well-placed shot from the point.
Â
Â
The teams would head into the second intermission locked in the 3-3 tie but 6:11 into the third period, Byfuglien scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal after weaving through the Beavers' defense.
Â
The Beavers went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill but so did the Huskies after they didn't allow a goal on two power-play chances.
Â
Senior
Mattias Sholl made 19 saves in the game but earns his first loss of the season and falls to 0-1-0.
Â
Bemidji State and St. Cloud State now hit the road back to Bemidji and will face-off for game two tomorrow night at Sanford Center. Puck drop is slated for 6:07 p.m.
