BEMIDJI, Minn. – No. 15/16 St. Cloud State University spoiled the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team home opener downing the Beavers 3-2 and earning the series sweep Saturday night at Sanford Center. Trailing 3-1 late in the game, senior captain
Jackson Jutting scored a power-play goal with 8:09 to play to pull the Beavers within one but it was too little too late as SCSU left Bemidji with the 3-2 victory.
Bemidji State falls to 1-2-0 to start the season while the Huskies improved to 3-0-0.
St. Cloud State's Austin Burnevik factored in all three Husky goals while Jutting and senior defenseman
Will Magnuson each scored for the Beavers.
Burnevik began the game scoring a power-play goal 10:18 into the first period which SCSU carried the one-goal lead into the first intermission.
The Beavers tied it up in the second period when Magnuson scored his first goal of the season and first since Nov. 11, 2022 with a shot that made its way through traffic and past Husky goaltender Isak Posch.
Just 1:10 later, SCSU's Barrett Hall put the Huskies back up by one with his first goal of the season. St. Cloud State struck again just before the period's end and with 2:16 to play in the frame, Colin Ralph scored his first of the season deflating the home crowd.
The energy picked up again midway through the third when Jutting scored his power-play goal at 11:51 for his second of the season and the Beavers' first power-play marker.
The Beavers pushed late to find the equalizing goal but Posch stayed strong in the final minutes and held the Beavers' from scoring the tying goal.
Posch finished with 23 saves on the night while Beaver netminder
Mattias Sholl made 22 saves but earned his second loss of the season (0-2-0).
The Beavers will take time to rest and recuperate with one of its two bye weeks next weekend and return Oct. 25-26 to being Central Collegiate Hockey Association play at Ferris State University.
