Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Sholl, Beavers blank Bulldogs to earn series split Saturday night

BSU Men’s Hockey senior Mattias Sholl makes all 30 saves for fifth career shutout

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – Bemidji State University senior goaltender stopped all 30 shots he faced Saturday night to help the Beavers earn a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series split at Ferris State University with the Beavers downing the Bulldogs 3-0 in the game. Sholl collected the fifth shutout of his career to tie for the eighth most in program history at Bemidji State.

Sholl's 30-saves is the most in his five shutouts at Bemidji State and the most by a BSU netminder since Zach Driscoll made 39 saves at University of Alaska on Nov. 1, 2019. Sholl was aided by junior Kirklan Irey and seniors Tony Follmer and Jere Vaisanen who each scored in the game to collect his first victory of the season.

Irey and Follmer each added an assist for their first multi-point efforts of the season and for Follmer, it was his first career two-point night.

Irey opened the scoring 9:56 into the first period for the Beavers with his first goal of the season after finding open space in the slot and snapped home a wrist shot past FSU goaltender Noah West.

The Beavers took the one-goal lead into the first intermission and just 3:59 into the second period, senior defenseman Tony Follmer scored his first goal of the season as well and second of his career.

Just before the period's end, senior Jere Vaisane scored his third goal of the series with 2:42 to play in the frame.

The Beavers clamped down its defenses in the third period and held the Bulldogs to just six shots in the final 20 minutes which Sholl turned aside to complete his fifth career shutout and first of the season. Sholl was especially dialed in in the second period where he stopped 15-of-15 shots in the middle frame.

Sholl improved to 1-3-0 on the season while the Beavers moved to 2-3-0 (1-1-0 CCHA) with the Saturday night victory.

Bemidji State now returns home and prepares to host Minnesota State University, Mankato at Sanford Center for a two-game series Nov. 1-2.
