No. 16 Mavericks answer back to split series at Sanford Center

No. 16 Minnesota State downs BSU Men’s Hockey 2-1 Saturday to split CCHA series

BEMIDJI, Minn. – No. 16 Minnesota State University, Mankato salvaged the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series split with the (RV) Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team Saturday night after earning a 2-1 victory in game two at Sanford Center.

The Mavericks (6-4-0, 1-1-0 CCHA) dictated play in the game and finally broke through senior netminder Mattias Sholl and the Beavers' defenses to score their first goal in 216:45 minutes of hockey between the two teams.

Minnesota dominated the game from the start outshooting the Beavers 12-6 after the first period but Sholl continued his outstanding performance between the pipes to keep the Mavericks scoreless for another 20 minutes adding to his back-to-back shutout performance.

However, the Mavericks finally broke through in the second period when Rhett Pitlick scored a power-play goal with just 3:15 left in the frame to end Sholl and the Beavers' shutout streak at 163:48.

It would take just 1:23 for the Mavericks to score their second goal when Brett Moravec scored while at even strength.

The second period ended with Minnesota State holding its 2-0 lead but after a late penalty by the Mavericks, Bemidji State capitalized quickly in the third and freshman Isa Parekh scored his first collegiate goal after firing the puck through multiple bodies that Maverick goaltender Alex Tracy didn't see to score on the power play.

The Beavers pushed late in the period to make it a game and even had a power-play opportunity with less than five minutes to play but Tracy denied the Beavers of the tying goal to come away with the victory.

Tracy finished the game making 20-of-21 saves to earn his sixth victory of the season while Sholl stopped 28-of-30 in another impressive outing.

The Beavers now prepare for their first road trip to Sioux Falls, S.D., next weekend and travels to Augustana University Nov. 8-9.
